Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Think of a number between one and ten.No, hang on, let's make this interesting. Between zero and infinity. Even if you stick to the whole numbers, there are a lot to choose from - an infinite number in fact. Throw in decimal fractions and infinity suddenly gets an awful lot bigger (is that even possible ) And then there are the negative numbers, the imaginary numbers, the irrational numbers like pi which never end. It literally never ends. The world of numbers is indeed strange and beautiful. Among its inhabitants are some really notable characters - pi, e, the 'imaginary' number i and the famous golden ratio to name just a few. Prime numbers occupy a special status. Zero is very odd indeed: is it a number, or isn't it How Numbers Work takes a tour of this mind-blowing but beautiful realm of numbers and the mathematical rules that connect them. Not only that, but take a crash course on the biggest unsolved problems that keep mathematicians up at night, find out about the strange and unexpected ways mathematics influences our everyday lives, and discover the incredible connection between numbers and reality itself.ABOUT THE SERIESNew Scientist Instant Expert books are definitive and accessible entry points to the most important subjects in science; subjects that challenge, attract debate, invite controversy and engage the most enquiring minds. Designed for curious readers who want to know how things work and why, the Instant Expert series explores the topics that really matter and their impact on individuals, society, and the planet, translating the scientific complexities around us into language that's open to everyone, and putting new ideas and discoveries into perspective and context.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Let no one ignorant of mathematics enter here,' was the inscription that Plato had inscribed above the Athens Academy. From Antiquity to the present, mathematics remains a fundamental subject for anyone wishing to understand the nature of things. But is it possible to penetrate the mathematical world without undertaking long, difficult studies The author argues that it is - at least to a certain point. What matters is not so much a thorough mastery of mathematical skills as an understanding of how the human mied - and particularly the mathematician's mied - takes in mathematical reality. This accessible approach to mathematics (and to mathematicians) will interest experts and non-experts alike. Each chapter examines an important mathematical idea and the visionary mieds bhind it (Newton, Gödel, Turing, Bourbaki, etc.).This entertaining and impertinent book is a fascinating journey into the world of mathematics.David Ruelle, the celebrated author of Chance and Chaos, is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and a professor of theoretical physics at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques, in Bures-en-Yvette, France. He is internationally renowned for his work on fluid mechanics and chaos theory.

In den WarenkorbA4 format, secured by two staples to left edge. Unpaginated. With a 1p. ALS. Wrappers a little bumped and marked, staples rusted, but a well preserved copy. Ink of ALS a little blanched with age. Wrapper design and graphics by John Wright. Issue no. 1 of this poetry magazine, WITH AN ALS FROM EDITOR JEREMY SILVER TO HEATHCOTE WILLIAMS. Published three time yearly from Silver's home in North London, Strange Mathematics was (according to the editorial published in this first issue) '.an eclectic collection of different kinds of writings, and images which variously explore concrete and abstract systems of space and number, time and movement, emotion and will, power and value etc. All of these are integrally part of our lives and our society whether they are hidden or so blatant that they are difficult to see.' Contributors to this issue include John Freeman, Graham Sykes, Janet Sutherland and Dave Cunliffe, as well as Silver himself. Strange Mathematics ran to seven issues, published between 1982 and 1984. This copy belonged to Heathcote Williams, and was sent to him by the magazine's editor Jeremy Silver. The cover letter, dated 26 March 1982, reads: 'Dear Heathcote, I am writing on the recommendation of [UK Beat poet and founder of the Poetry Olympics] Michael Horowitz. As you can see I'm producing a new magazine called "Strange Mathematics". M.H. suggested I wrote to you 'cos he siad you've got "a great Maths poem" -- well I don't know if that's still available -- but if it is -- and any other material you might like to send -- I would very much like to include some of your work in the second issue. I hope you find this of interest -- oh! I'm afraid that there's only a complementary copy by way of payment -- but alas -- you know the situation! Look forward to your reply, Yours, Jeremy Silver'.
