Buch
Original softcover. Zustand: Gut. Revised and enlarged edition. XII, 79 p., plates. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Skewed binding, small tear in the back cover, glue binding visible on front endpaper, otherwise good and clean. / Verbogener Einband, kleiner Riss im hinteren Deckel, Klebebindung sichtbar am vorderen Vorsatz, sonst gut und sauber. - The City of Ely may be small in comparison with other cities, but it can look back on a history which has lasted for almost 1300 years. Although remote in its Fenland fastness it has been visited by men and women well-known in the pages of history. Canute, William the Conqueror, Hereward the Wake, Henry III, Edward III and Queen Phillipa, Oliver Cromwell, the Prince Regent and many more. The events of this long period have been recorded, not only in words but in stones, and although the Author has drawn on many sources of information he has tried to include only such things as he could verify from personal observation of the buildings concerned. Sufficient has been said to give the reader a picture of the events of interest during thirteen centuries and if further detail is required the Bibliography will guide the reader in his researches. Behind the story he will be able to detect the gradual change in the status and fortunes of the inhabitants and learn how, under a quiet exterior, an industrious and closely knit community lives to the full. - The author was educated at Bristol Grammar School where he first developed his interest in architecture, and that of cathedrals in particular, from his Headmaster, the late Mr. J. E. Barton. He came to Ely in 1933 to manage the century-old business of printers, publishers and booksellers which occupied the site of the present Public Library. He owes much of his knowledge of Ely and its surroundings to the previous proprietor, Mr. G. H. Tyndall, who, in addition to his many other interests, was a skilful photographer and had taken many hundreds of photographs of Ely Cathedral over the course of some forty years. Mr. Dorman has an extensive knowledge of the churches in East Anglia. He is a member of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
