[In Vegetable Staticks, Hales studied transpiration - the loss of water from the leaves of plants. He estimated the surface area of the leaves of the plant and the length and surface area of the roots. This allowed Hales to compare the calculated influx of water into the plant with the amount of water leaving the plant by transpiration through the leaves. He also measured 'the force of the sap' or root pressure. Hales commented that "plants very probably draw through their leaves some part of their nourishment from the air". He prefigured the cohesion theory of water movement in plants, although his ideas were not understood at the time, so he did not influence the debate on water transport in plants in the 19th century. He also speculated that plants might use light as a source of energy for growth (i.e. photosynthesis), based on Isaac Newton's suggestion that "gross bodies and light" might be interconvertible. He also describes experiments that showed that "air freely enters plants, not only with the principal fund of nourishment by the roots, but also thro' the surface of their trunks and leaves". While Hales' work on the chemistry of air appears primitive by modern standards, its importance was acknowledged by Antoine Lavoisier, the discoverer of oxygen. Hales' invention of the pneumatic trough to collect gases over water is also considered a major technical advance. Volume one, first published in 1727 as Vegetable staticks: or, an account of some statical experiments on the sap in vegetables," was the "first complete account of the physiology of plants." (Horblit) "In his investigations of plant physiology, . . . Hales studied the movement of water in plants, determining that leaf suction is the main force by which water is raised through a plant, and showing that plants lose water constantly via transpiration through their leaves." (Garrison-Morton) Thomas Jefferson included Vegetable Staticks on the list of agricultural books that he recommended be purchased for the Library of Congress. (Sowerby) Volume two, first published in 1733, investigated the movement of blood in animals, measuring cardiac capacity, blood pressure, and blood velocity, and was a major step toward the modern understanding of the mechanics of the heart and circulation. The book plate is perhaps that of one of the publishers or of the botanist Thomas Jenkinson Woodward (17441820), joint author with Samuel Goodenough, bishop of Carlisle, of Observations on the British Fuci (1797) and contributor to Smith and Sowerby's English Botany, to William Withering's second edition of Systematic Arrangement of British Plants, and to Thomas Martyn's edition of Philip Miller's Gardeners' Dictionary. But more likely, given the squirrel crest, it belonged to one of the Woodwards of Hopton Court, Shropshire. N. B. The COPY of the English engineer, Matthew Boulton (1728-1809; F.R.S., 1785), member of the Lunar Society, partner of James Watt (1772-1809, with whom he built the first Watt steam engine. Boulton is also credited with numerous engineering inventions and patents. Each volume has Boulton's woodcut bookplate and the small bookplate of Christie's stating sold December 1986 at their Boulton Library sale. A small, not very noticeable puncture hole near the lower edge of the front cover of vol. 2 continues in the lower blank margins of the first two signatures, some light staining to early margins of vol. 2; still a very good set. Sir Francis Darwin has written: "In first opening the way to a correct appreciation of blood pressure, Hales' work may rank second in importance to Harvey's founding the modern science of physiology."
