July to December 1885. ii pp + 284 pp. Illustrated with numerous portrait engravings, plates illustrating guns, line drawings and decorated initials. Blue cloth with red and gilt decorations on upper board, spine titled in gilt, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. 8vo. (150mm x 216mm). Spine very faded and nicked - good only. The publishers produced ten volumes, bound in decorative cloth of diffent colours, covering the five years of publication. All of them have incorrect information on the title-page. In this example the title-page states July to December 1885, whereas the articles within were actually published August 1885 to January 1886. Contains a mixture of articles on a variety of sports (coarse fishing, deer and boar hunting, fen skating, game shooting, yachting, racing and coursing, together with short biographies and portraits of well-known sportsmen, and a little sporting verse. .

Scarce in its original illustrated hardback boards Comprised of issues 1 to 25 of Pierce Egan's Book of Sports and Mirror of Life, with twenty five illustrations. Egan provides an entertaining compendium of sports lore, with articles on horse racing, boxing, cricket, and fencing. Pierce Egan was a British journalist and sports writer, who also wrote about popular culture. His 1821 book, Life in London, was adapted into a stage play and became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances at the Adelphi Theatre. This volume is uncommon, but particularly in its original illustrated hardback boards. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. This volume was previously owned by Purnell Bransby Purnell, who was MP for Gloucester in the early nineteenth century. In the publisher's original binding. Externally, worn. Lightly rubbed to the boards with some wear to the extremities. The spine is missing, and the boards are held together by cords only and may detach with further handling. Internally, the binding is rather loose. Pages are lightly age toned but generally clean. Good Only. book.
