(Ted) Smith, already in the Royal Air Force by…his eighteenth birthday, served for over five years on more than thirty RAF bases, including bases in South Africa, Southern Rhodesia, England, Scotland, France, Belgium, and Holland. As a fighter-bomber pilot, Smith flew Spitfires in 90 missions, a third of which were bombing attacks. Following the war in 1946, he became one of the world's first jet pilots, flying Gloster Meteors with 74 Squadron.
