First edition, and the first publication by Walter Whiter (1758-1832), literary scholar. This interesting work was largely overlooked by contemporaries and even slightly later critics such as Coleridge, but his treatment of image clusters and ideas anticipates the creative criticism of twentieth-century writers on Shakespeare like Caroline Spurgeon. Provenance. Early armorial bookplate of Richard Davenport. Later owned by the Folger Shakespeare Library, with their duplicate disposal stamp at end.
