320 pages with bibliography. (Wordsworth Classics of World Literature) . BRAND NEW. This astonishing series of aphorisms, put into the mouth of the Persian sage Zarathustra, or Zoroaster, contains the kernel of Nietzsche`s thought. - God is dead`, he tells us. Christianity is decadent, leading mankind into a slave morality concerned not with this life, but with the next. Nietzsche emphasises the Übermensch, or Superman, whose will to power makes him the creator of a new heroic mentality. The intensely felt ideas are expressed in prose-poetry of indefinable beauty. Though misused by the German National Socialist party as a spurious justification of their creed, the book also had a profound influence on early twentieth-century writers such as Shaw, Mann, Gide, Lawrence and Sartre.

Translated by Alexander Tille. First edition in English, first issue. 8vo. xxiii, [7], 488, 8 [publisher's advertisements] pp. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt with blind-stamped decorative roundels, black coated endpapers, edges untrimmed (neat contemporary ownership inscription of 'Hugh E. Seebohm' to half title, a few isolated instances of pencilled underling, otherwise generally internally clean; some trivial shelf wear to extremities, corners gently bumped, an excellent copy). Housed in a morocco backed solander box. London, H. Henry and Co. Ltd. The first English translation of Nietzsche's defining philosophical work. A sprawling, rhapsodic work, written primarily in prose, Zarathustra served as a thunderous announcement of Nietzsche's mature philosophy. Under the guise of the central character Zarathustra, a re-invention and subversion of his namesake, Nietzsche expounds his declamatory message of the Übermensch, the death of God, and the transvaluation of all values. The present English translation was advertised as the eighth volume of a projected eleven volume set of Nietzsche's collected works, although confusingly it was in fact only the second title published in the series overall. The unbound sheets of the first edition were eventually purchased by the publisher T. Fisher Unwin, who re-issued the book with their imprint on the spine - the present example is the correct first issue with 'Henry and Co.' in gilt to the spine. An American edition also appeared later in the same year published by the Macmillan Company in New York. PMM, 370 (first edition).

Erstausgabe
First British edition, first issue, of the first English translation of Nietzsche's masterwork, "his highest single achievement" (Schaberg), which had a profound impact on subsequent philosophical, political, and literary thinking. It remains the most widely read of his works. Nietzsche wrote in his autobiography: "In my lifework, my Zarathustra holds a place apart. With it, I gave my fellow-men the greatest gift that has ever been bestowed upon them. This book, the voice of which speaks out across the ages, is not only the loftiest book on earth, literally the book of mountain air - the whole phenomenon, mankind, lies at an incalculable distance beneath it - but it is also the deepest book, born of the inmost abundance of truth; an inexhaustible well, into which no pitcher can be lowered without coming up again laden with gold and with goodness" (Ecce Homo, 1911, p. 5). Zarathustra was originally published in German in four parts between 1883 and 1885, with the first three volumes written in a frenzy of creativity, each lasting only ten days. Alexander Tille, the translator, served as Lecturer of German Literature at the University of Glasgow from 1890 to 1900, whereupon he returned to Germany due to disputes with students over the Boer War. The present edition constitutes volume 8 of a projected 11-volume set of Nietzsche's writings in English, although it was in fact the second title published. It was also published the same year by the Macmillan Company in New York - though no specific publication dates could be confirmed, contemporary newspapers begin to announce it as published and received at the end of June in Britain, and from the middle of July in the US, and so it can be inferred this British edition was published slightly earlier. This copy is in the first issue binding with H. Henry and Co.'s imprint on the spine; T. Fisher Unwin later purchased and bound remaining sheets with their imprint. Printing and the Mind of Man 370 (first edition); Schaberg, pp. 87ff. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt with roundels in blind, black endpapers, edges untrimmed. Date inscription (2 July 1903) to initial blank; partly removed Melbourne bookseller's ticket to the front pastedown; early ownership stamp to title page and inscription to contents page. Cloth a little rubbed and discoloured, short superficial split to front joint, browning from insert to pp. 8-9 else contents clean. A good copy.

Erstausgabe
First Levy edition, first impression, in a well-preserved example of the rare jacket. Dr Oscar Levy (1867-1946) was recognized as the leading authority on Nietzsche and edited the complete works. Levy produced this new text by thoroughly revising the 1909 English translation by Thomas Common. This edition, Common's sixth overall, is the first pocket edition and the first revised by Levy. In answer to the question, "Why read Nietzsche now?", the jacket blurb warns that "mass-education and the tremendous developments in mechanical science conspire to extinguish all sparks of rare and unusual talent. The book has thus survived the decadent era in which it first appeared and now demonstrates to the unfortunate heirs of that Era a way out of the rank jungle of Nihilism and Anarchy". This edition comprised 4,000 copies and is now scarce in commerce. The work was first published in German from 1883 to 1885 and in English by Alexander Tille in 1896. It remains the most widely read of Nietzsche's publications. Small octavo. Original dark blue skiver, spine lettered in gilt, top edge blue. With dust jacket. Printed on thin paper stock. Numeral ink stamp on rear free endpaper. Light spots to pastedowns, contents clean; jacket spine toned, panels a little darkened, front flap clipped, printed price retained: a near-fine copy in like jacket.
