Erstausgabe
First edition, first printing, trade issue, of the work considered, along with the Duino Elegies, to be Rilke's masterpiece. The sonnets were composed in what the author described as a "savage creative storm" during February 1922. The collection was dedicated, as a grab-mal ("grave-marker"), to Wera Ouckama Knoop (1900-1919), whose death from leukaemia inspired the sonnets. The 19-year-old dancer and musician was the daughter of Rilke's friend Gerhard Ouckama-Knoop and a close friend of Rilke's own daughter Ruth. David Young notes, in introducing his 1987 English translation of the Sonnets, that Rilke "does not center his poem on love for a particular person, but writes instead a kind of extended love-poem to the world, celebrating such diverse love-objects as mirrors, dogs, fruit, ancient sarcophagi, roses, a strip of cloth, unicorns, breathing and childhood." We can trace only three other copies in the dust jacket in auction records. Octavo. Original marbled paper boards, green label to front cover lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. With dust jacket. Spine ends lightly worn, superficial split to front joint, contents lightly foxed but clean; jacket toned, a few chips and short closed tears to extremities, small loss to spine ends, flaps without price as issued: a very good copy in very good jacket.

First edition, deluxe issue, number 129 of 300 copies on handmade paper by W. Drugulin, deluxe copy in the full calf binding by H. Sperling. Copies are known in both green and blue calf. Die Sonette an Orpheus (The Sonnets to Orpheus) is considered, along with the Duino Elegies, as Rilke's masterpiece. They were composed in what the author described as a "savage creative storm" during February 1922. The collection was dedicated, as a "grab-mal" ("grave-marker"), to Wera Ouckama Knoop (1900-1919), whose death from leukemia inspired the sonnets. The 19-year-old dancer and musician was the daughter of Rilke's friend Gerhard Ouckama-Knoop and a close friend of Rilke's own daughter Ruth. David Young notes, in introducing his 1987 English translation of the Sonnets, that Rilke "does not center his poem on love for a particular person, but writes instead a kind of extended love-poem to the world, celebrating such diverse love-objects as mirrors, dogs, fruit, ancient sarcophagi, roses, a strip of cloth, unicorns, breathing and childhood." Ralph Freedman, Life of a Poet: Rainer Maria Rilke, 1998, p. 479. Octavo (214 x 139 mm). Bound for the publishers by H. Sperling in green calf, spine lettered in gilt with raised bands, boards ruled in gilt, front cover with gilt wreath emblem in centre, turn-ins gilt, gilt and green painted endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near fine condition. First edition. Octavo. 63 (1)pp. Original marbled boards with gilt lettering on debossed green label of cover, protected by modern mylar. Inspired by the death of Wera Ouckama Knoop, playmate of Rilke's daughter, the Sonnets to Orpheus were written in February of 1922 at the Chateau de Muzot during a creative three-week period Rilke described as "savage creative storm." With Rilke's Duino Elegies, which were finished at the same time, the Sonnets are considered Rilke's masterpieces though Robert Musil highlights the Duino Elegies as the peak of Rilke's and German poetry. Subtitled as a monument for the young dancer and friend of Rilke's daughter, it's difficult to find direct references to that effect in the sonnets, and the Myth of Orpheus doesn't play the role one might expect. The structure of the rhymes, metric and cadences vary throughout. Text in German. Ex-Libris of Max u. Luise Stavenhagen, he a prominent German officer, politician and Hamburg Senator on inside front cover.
