Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. reprint. Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 249 pages; [SIGNED] 1949 Doubleday & Company. HC. Reprint of the original 1937 issue. Notable for the signed inscription by Robb White on the front flyleaf to one of Eric Severied's sons, the book itself is sadly in disrepair. Cheaply bound in black paper covered boards and using low grade paper, the boards are rubbed at edges with nicking and fraying to binding material at spine ends. The cheap paper is uniformly toned and appears brittle. Bookplate to front pastedown notes the 1966 gift from the Eric Severeid family to the Burgundy Farm Country day School, with the school's library stamps and penned catalog numbers to endpages, pocket and slip remnant to rear endpages. Portion of front jacket flap glued down to verso of flyleaf. The book is rough ex-library but very infrequently seen in signed copies; this example with the interesting association, signed to the son of one of the more highly regarded mid-20th century print and broadcast journalists. The scarce First US printing published by Little,Brown and Co. in 1937.The BOOK is in VERY GOOD++ or better condition.The Boards are relatively clean for their age.Corners lightly bumped and rubbed in places.The spine tips are pushed and lightly frayed at the upper end.Hint of a lean and some foxing of the upper text block which does not extend to the pages. Blue titling and vignette still very bright.Pages very clean and free from inscription.The extremely scarce WRAPPER is in VERY GOOD++ condition being complete and the true first issue.There is NO fading of spine colouring. Some edge wear with rubbing and nicks more-so to the upper spine.Small closed tear to the front spine fold.The wonderful period ANDREW WYETH wrapper artwork looks stunning in the removable Brodart archival protector.Andrew Wyeth has illustrated the book with 4 B/W drawings and the frontispiece.Wyeth was a visual artist, primarily a realist painter,working predominantly in a regionalist style.He was one of the best-known U.S. artists of the middle 20th century.The author's elusive second book and a key children's title.Not published in a UK edition with the Wyeth illustrations.Scarce in wrapper.ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.…
