Norah Margaret Ruth Cordner James était une femme d'avant-garde, diplômée de la prestigieuse Slade School of Fine Art, elle fréquentait le Club 1917, ce cercle politique et littéraire où se côtoyaient des penseurs socialistes comme Harold Laski et H.G. Wells. Elle avait d'ailleurs travaillé au Ministère des Pensions, où elle s'était engagée pour les droits des travailleurs. Cette expérience du monde du travail, ses convictions progressistes et sa vision sans détour du désir féminin transparaissent dans ce roman qui, malgré sa brièveté, dérangeait les bonnes murs victoriennes. L'ouvrage explore les thèmes chers à James, notamment l'univers hospitalier, et développe une histoire d'amour crue et passionnée, empreinte d'une liberté de ton qui explique pourquoi les censeurs britanniques ont voulu le réduire au silence. 'Sleeveless Errand' was originally published in London by Eric Partridge in early 1929. That edition was swiftly suppressed by the authorities for its 'verbal obscenities' and almost all copies confiscated and destroyed. Encouraged by the strong recommendation of Edward Garnett, Jack Kahane purchased the rights and within a month had published the book in Paris where it sold for a hundred francs a copy. Following this success Kahane founded his celebrated Obelisk Press. Pearson A1.

Edward Garnett, in the preface to this edition, points out that the British censors were apparently upset by some of the l…anguage used (for example, one character uses the term "bloody hell") as well as inappropriate suggestiveness (a man and woman lay together on a bed but only to talk). The novel was printed in the U.K. by Scholaris but virtually all copies were seized and destroyed. Jack Kahane, founder of the Obelisk Press, immediately published it in Paris. The Americans apparently had less of a problem with it as it was published in the U.S. by Morrow. Very good, light soiling to the spine strip and some wear to the edges of the boards. No dust jacket.

Large 8vo., cream cloth-backed decorative black and white boards; spine lettered in black; outer edges untrimmed; together in the original pictorial wrapper printed…in black and yellow, priced '50 Francs' to the spine, and featuring a striking period design by M. Kahane ; The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. A little bubbled along the backstrip, with spotting to edges of text block and prelims, and the odd spot throughout. Some light splash marks to the lower edge of pages 90-91 ; The WRAPPER is in Very Good++ condition. The panels and spine are a little toned, with some light spots and marking; rubbed to folds; some small nicks, chips and closed tears to extremities, the longest 3.5cm approx; repaired to the verso with tape. The wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. First Paris printing in the second state wrapper which is exactly the same as the first issue in design but detailing 'The Obelisk Press' as the publisher, the price as '50 francs' (initially sold at 100 francs) and the rear panel carrying four Obelisk Press titles, the last of which, 'The Well of Loneliness' dates the wrapper from no earlier than May 1933. Indeed, James knew Radclyffe Hall well, and attended the 1928 obscenity trial for 'The Well of Loneliness'. Here, the Arnold Bennett review quoted on the front flap has also been reset, and beneath it now appears 'Entirely unexpurgated edition of the novel that was SEIZED BY THE LONDON POLICE'. The wrapper artwork, the same as the first, was provided by the artist Marcelle Kahane (the publisher's wife). Kahane had overestimated the demand for the book in 1929 and consequently found himself with piles of unsold copies. These went on to be sold in the 1930's, as here, in the second issue wrapper, the revised wording of which claimed the book for the Obelisk Press. The first Paris edition of Norah James' debut novel, which was banned in the UK shortly after publication. The novel follows Paula, a bohemian jilted by a lover, with an existential itch. She resorts to suicide, forming a pact with a stranger to drive off of a cliff. Though the stranger backs out, Paula proceeds with the plan. Originally printed in London by Scholartis Press, a proof copy of that edition was, as the wrapper correctly states, seized and the publisher was prosecuted by Bow Street Police Court. Of the 750 copies produced, 517 were confiscated before they even hit the shelves, and most of the others were destroyed in the days which followed. Later investigation suggested that the police had been tipped off about the content from the editor of the 'Morning Post', shortly after they had received the review copy. It was subsequently printed in Paris that same year by Jack Kahane's Obelisk Press. According to one publication, 'Sleeveless Errand' was likely the most suppressed novel ever to be published in England. Every store containing copies was raided, and a guard was posted to stand outside one such location for an entire weekend before the owner could be located to remove it. Even today, no-one has been able to provide an adequate explanation for this reaction, and why it was censored so intensively, although one theory suggests that it was because of one specific word printed in the book. The official basis for the prosecution was that the novel could have a degrading, immoral influence, and 'tended to excite unhealthy passions'. The publication undoubtedly sparked a lively debate concerning censorship, with Arnold Bennett calling it a "merciless exposure of neurotics and decadents" and Garnett defending the apparent blasphemy and promiscuity by comparing it with Hemingway's 'Fiesta', which received none of the same treatment. "At the same table in a London coffee-shop sit a man and a woman. The man has just discovered that his wife is unfaithful, and is meditating suicide. The woman, Laura, whose lover has just thrown her over, is determined on the same thing. The man follows her when she goes out -- to her apartment. The rest of the book is a history of their next thirty-six hours." A notorious novel of its day, it was (per the jacket blurb) "recently banned and confiscated in London" (under the Obscene Publications Act); the following year, it became the first book published by Jack Kahane's newly-established Obelisk Press in Paris, and its brisk sales help to get the fledgling firm off to a good start. According to a contemporary critic quoted on the rear jacket blurb, "Miss James knows her neurotic society of modern London and she portrays it with a veracity that creates shudders of apprehension and pity in the reader." The censors certainly seem to have been apprehensive, but there seems to have been very little pity involved in their judgment that the book contained "conversations by persons entirely devoid of decency and morality" and that "blasphemy is freely indulged in by all the characters, and filthy language and indecent situations appear to be the keynote." The Irish-born author wrote more than a dozen more novels during the 1930s, but any momentum for a "literary" career that she might have gotten from this book seems to have rapidly dissipated, and eventually her name became associated almost exclusively with the numerous potboilers she turned out in the romance genre, at least through the 1960s. Today, however, she is so thoroughly forgotten that she doesn't even rate a basic Wikipedia page (the new measure of cultural obscurity in our society).

In den WarenkorbFirst Paris edition, first printing. Publisher's original cream quarter cloth and patterned paper covered boards, in the M. Kahane illustrated first state dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, bright and fresh, with some shelfwear rubbing to the bottom edge of the boards. The contents, with some spotting to… the endpapers, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. The closed text block edge is somewhat toned and marked. Complete with the good, rubbed, nicked and toned dustwrapper the has several tears (secured with tape to the underside), and small chips to the spine tips, upper edge of the rear panel and corners. The underside of the dustwrapper has a name in pencil to the upper edge of the rear panel. Publisher's original [first state] price of 100 Fr net is present to the spine. Uncommon in the dustwrapper. The author's first book. Originally to be published in London on 21 February 1929 by the Scholartis Press, the novel was deemed obscene by the authorities prior to publication, the publisher prosecuted at Bow Street Magistrate's Court and all but a handful of advance copies destroyed. This Paris printing, the first obtainable edition, was produced by Jack Kahane in April of the same year. It was the first of the banned English books that he published in Paris. The dustwrapper is the only difference between first and second-issue. The publisher overestimated demand for the book in 1929 and was left with piles of unsold copies. Scarce. A bleak novel of London night-life, in part autobiographical, which attracted controversy that rested as much on external circumstances as the book's own contents. On the eve of publication, the publisher, Eric Partridge, was visited by the police - a chain of events begun by a reviewer at the Morning Post in receipt of an advance copy, who notified the Home Secretary as to the book's perceived obscenity. The police seized every copy of the book that they could lay their hands on; these were subsequently destroyed. Partridge considered that 'a few review copies and perhaps ten others' may have eluded them, as well as 'about thirty copies' sent to the US ('The First Three Years', p. 25). Following the successful prosecution of the work, whose obscenity was seen to reside in its 'filthy language and indecent situations', it was taken up by the enterprising Jack Kahane for a Paris edition that established the model for a series of succès de scandale with his Obelisk Press. Both the scarcity and the importance of the book derive from its fate at the hands of the authorities; it was the author's debut novel, and its refusal by Jonathan Cape, where James was then employed, must be seen as a direct effect of that publisher's prosecution the previous year for issuing Radclyffe Hall's 'The Well of Loneliness' at whose trial James had sat, in the same Bow Street Magistrates' Court that would rule against her own work.
