Text block is entirely unmarked, appears unread. The first work of its kind, Lunn's monograph deals comprehensively with the sport in three sections. The first concerns its early pre-history in Scandinavia (Part I). The second traces skiing's development among Central European mountaineers between 1897 (the date of Wilhelm Paulcke's first traverse of the Oberland) and the author's own day (Parts II-III). The third section, by far the longest, deals with British skiing, including Lunn's own contributions as founder of the Alpine Ski Club and, interestingly, the inventor of the slalom (Part IV). Sir Arnold was knighted in 1952 for his services to British skiing, the crown, and Anglo-Swiss relations. A superb copy of skiing's first dedicated, first-hand overview in English. Rare.…
