One of the most influential works on forestry ever published in which Evelyn implores landowners to plant trees. This, the 1776 edition, being the First Edition edited by Scottish physician Alexander Hunter and with illustrations by German engraver and botanist John Miller. This copy with the portrait frontispiece of Evelyn by Francesco Bartolozzi, 8 pages of subscribers including James Boswell, Joseph Banks, and Edward Gibbon (among many others), and the large folding explanatory table; also the armorial bookplate of William Moore and with neat marginalia to three leaves providing further commentary on remarkable oaks from the regions. Spine rubbed and with some chipping to spine crown, a later leather title label added. Minor foxing, mostly to edges and final leaves. Minor tanning and offsetting to the plates. 'Silva' was written as an encouragement to landowners to plant trees to provide timber for England's burgeoning Navy. This edition was revised and added to by Alexander Hunter, a medical practioner and fellow of the Royal Society, who included many additional engravings.

These make the subject of the Notes, which are drawn from the most respectable authorities" (Hunter, preface, [1]). A very important book on the growth and management of trees in England. Hunter indicates that, "soon after the publication of the Silva, which made its appearance in 1664, under the Auspices of the Royal Society, the Spirit for Planting increased to a high degree; and there is reason to believe that many of our ships which, in the last war, gave laws to the whole world, were constructed from Oaks planted at that time" (Ibid., [3]). John Evelyn was born into a substantial Surrey landowning family. He embarked on a prolonged and formative period of travel in Italy and France, finally coming to rest in Paris in 1647. This 1776 edition, prepared by Dr. Alexander Hunter [1729-1809] of York, virtually doubled the size of the original text, adding extensive annotations, practical instructions, and references to the best eighteenth century authorities, including Linnaeus, Philip Miller, Duhamel du Monceau, Buffon, and Pehr Kalm. There is an excellent account by William Speechly, gardener to the Duke of Portland, describing the method of forming plantations used at Welbeck. According to Hunter the text had been collated with all five of the previous editions and corrected with the help of "some Original Manuscripts". Also notable in this edition are the thirty-six fine plates showing foliage, flowers, and fruits of various types of trees, drawn and engraved by John Miller (Johann Sebastian Müller). Other plates include a 'Winter View of the Cawthorpe Oak', near Wetherby, Yorkshire, engraved by Miller after a drawing by William Burgh, and two views of the famous Greendale Oak at the Duke of Portland's estate engraved by Thomas Vivares and A.Rooker after drawings made in 1775 by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm. An outstanding copy of one of the most important books written on forestry, newly updated to provide the latest discoveries by Andrew Hunter, who felt anyone with land should plant or at least nurture the trees they already had, rather than wait until they are too old to plant a new tree to replace that tree which soon will die along with the owner. Hunter states that anyone can plant a tree but will they know species they are planting? Will they know how to nurture that newly planted tree? This edition is regarded by most, the best edition. The Editor, Andrew Hunter did not include "Pomona" or "Kalendarium Hortense" as he believed these were not appropriate: Let me quote from the Editor's Preface: "I have nothing left but to observe, that the liberties I have taken with the Text, in a variety of places, are warranted from a careful Collation of the five Editions with some Original Manuscripts, without which I could not possibly have proceeded with any degree of satisfaction; for of all the books in the English Language, there are, perhaps, none so corrupted as the two last editions of the Silva: The one printed in 1704; the other in 1729." A lovely, wide margined copy, internally clean and bright.

"The Royal Society, founded in 1660 and patronised by Charles II in 1661, finally received its Royal Charter with permission to publish in 1662. The first books to be produced under this new permission were Robert Hooke's Micrographia and John Evelyn's Sylva, first published in 1664. Evelyn was one of the founding members of the Royal Society, a keen diarist (for which he is best known) and a scholar with a wide range of interests in the new sciences. His book Sylva came about as a result of a request to the Royal Society by the Commissioners of the Navy for a report on forestry. Forests were at the time being extensively plundered by the Royal Navy in its demand for more ships, and Evelyn recommended new planting to meet the demand for more wood and provide for the future. One such suggestion by Evelyn was for the nobility to plant grand tree lined avenues of oak trees leading to their country estates. This, he argued, would provide both a useful supply of timber for warships and would optically enhance the view along the primary driveway. The book went into several editions, continuing to be expanded and published by presses throughout Britain such as this illustrated 1786 edition printed in York by the bookseller Ann Ward, until the early nineteenth century."
