It, therefore, became my indispensable duty to bring down the improvements to the present time. These make the subject of the Notes, which are drawn from the most respectable authorities" (Hunter, preface, [1]). A very important book on the growth and management of trees in England. Hunter indicates that, "soon after the publication of the Silva, which made its appearance in 1664, under the Auspices of the Royal Society, the Spirit for Planting increased to a high degree; and there is reason to believe that many of our ships which, in the last war, gave laws to the whole world, were constructed from Oaks planted at that time" (Ibid., [3]). John Evelyn was born into a substantial Surrey landowning family. He embarked on a prolonged and formative period of travel in Italy and France, finally coming to rest in Paris in 1647. He soon established himself as one of the foremost virtuosi of his day. Evelyn?s Silva was "the first important book to be published in [Britain] on forest trees. No other work on the arboriculture exerted a greater influence on forestry in this country? and certainly no other book on the subject was so often quoted" (Henrey 101)., Size : Large 4to., Complete with 40 copper-engraved plates, including the frontispiece portrait of the author by Bartolozzi, as well as a folding plate of the Cawthorpe Oak. First Hunter Edition. Originally published in 1664, Evelyn's Sylva was "the first important book to be published in [Britain] on forest trees.no other work on arboriculture exerted a greater influence on forestry in this country.and certainly no other book on the subject was so often quoted." (Henrey, pp. 101, 108). This 1776 edition, prepared by Dr. Alexander Hunter [1729-1809] of York, virtually doubled the size of the original text, adding extensive annotations, practical instructions, and references to the best eighteenth century authorities, including Linnaeus, Philip Miller, Duhamel du Monceau, Buffon, and Pehr Kalm. There is an excellent account by William Speechly, gardener to the Duke of Portland, describing the method of forming plantations used at Welbeck. According to Hunter the text had been collated with all five of the previous editions and corrected with the help of "some Original Manuscripts". Also notable in this edition are the thirty-six fine plates showing foliage, flowers, and fruits of various types of trees, drawn and engraved by John Miller (Johann Sebastian Müller). Other plates include a 'Winter View of the Cawthorpe Oak', near Wetherby, Yorkshire, engraved by Miller after a drawing by William Burgh, and two views of the famous Greendale Oak at the Duke of Portland's estate engraved by Thomas Vivares and A.Rooker after drawings made in 1775 by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm. Nissen BBI 615. Pritzel 2766. Evelyn, who was born in 1620 and who died in 1706, managed to keep on the right side of both the royalists and the puritans during the Civil War. A virtuoso' (D.N.B.) who had many interests, he counted among his friends Robert Boyle, John Wilkins, Bishop of Chester, and Samuel Pepys. "Evelyn is the typical instance of the accomplished and public-spirited country gentleman of the Restoration, a pious and devoted member of the church of England, and a staunch loyalist in spite of his grave disapproval of the manners of the court. " - (D.N.B. XVIII, pp. 79~83) First published in 1664, this is the first edition prepared by Dr. A[lexander] Hunter of York (1 729-1809) who greatly expanded the work, adding erudite comments, annotations and references to other experts in the field, including Linaeus, Kalm, etc. *The provenance of the work is notable. The Cargill-Worsleys of Platt Hall, Manchester, Derbyshire were descendants of Charles Worsley, staunch Parliamentarian leader during the Civil War, and friend and confidant of Oliver Cromwell. John Carill Worsley is listed as a subscriber, and the bookplate and signature are of Thomas Carill Worsley (1739-1808). Charles Carill Worsley (1800-1864), another member of the family, had correspondence with Charles Darwin (Cambridge University Library Archives), and married Mary Jane Darwin (I817-I872), daughter of Francis Satcheverel Darwin. Family members were active in the Manchester Botanical and Horticultural Society of Manchester well into the twentieth century, and ninety acres of their property were sold to the city in I908 as a foundation for a large public park. The first illustrated edition of an important work, with an equally important provenance.

[Keynes Evelyn 47 (calling for 39 plates) Henrey 137 (calls for 40 plates)" Nissen BBI 615 (calling for 41 plates though almost all copies have 40)]. First Hunter edition, sixth overall, of this landmark work on forestry, one of the most influential texts ever published on the subject. The work shaped both the knowledge and the landscape of an entire nation throughout centuries."There can be no doubt that John Evelyn, both during his own lifetime and throughout the two centuries which have elapsed since his death in 1706, has exerted more individual influence, through his charming "Sylva", . than can be ascribed to any other individual." (Nisbet, in the preface to the 1908 reprint of the 1706-edition).Apart from its pivotal importance to forestry, reforestration, the history of planting in Europe and the direct benefits from that, the book is famously the first book to be printed by the Royal Society, which had been founded in 1664 (the second being Robert Hooke's "Microscopia"). The book was a huge success and it became immensely influential, making Evelyn famous among his contemporaries - such as Pepys, Hooke, and Locke - as a horticultural pioneer . "If you take a stroll through one of the nation's long-established woodlands, there is a good chance its management was inspired, influenced or even instructed by John Evelyn's Sylva.Widely recognised as the first comprehensive study of UK trees, Sylva, or - to give its full title - A Discourse of Forest Trees, and the Propagation of Timber in his Majesty's Dominions, made its first public appearance in 1662 as a paper submitted to the newly formed Royal Society. Two years later, it was published as the Royal Society's first book and went on to not only shape people's knowledge but the landscape itself. And it was an instant success, proving popular beyond its intended audience of wealthy aristocratic landowners, who were urged by Evelyn to plant trees in order to replenish the nation's depleted timber stock.Four editions were produced during Evelyn's lifetime, and the book is still widely quoted and remains in print and freely available online 350 years after its first publication. He designed his first garden when he was 22 years old, two decades before he penned Sylva. It was as a young man, after deciding fighting as a Royalist in the Civil War was not the best career choice, that he travelled across Europe and became fascinated by the formal gardens of France and the expansive grounds of Italy. On his return to England, he continued his work in the garden of his home at Sayes Court in Deptford, South-East London.Being located near the Royal Dockyard on the Thames allowed Evelyn to experiment with newly arrived botanical delights, testing how the flora fared in his English country garden. His attention to detail, and the careful recording of his observations reflected the appetite for empirical evidence among the early pioneers of modern science. "He was one of the early fellows of the Royal Society, which was created in 1660 as a scientific organisation, and Evelyn had spoken with the fellows about his work in this area and it very much chimed with the Society's early objectives," explained Royal Society head librarian Keith Moore. What we do now will have a knock-on effect for generations to come Dr Gabriel Hemery, The New Sylva co-author:"Quite clearly, Evelyn's work in planting forest trees and harvesting the products from them - whether it was wood or apples - really hit the mark" it was exactly what the Royal Society was interested in at that time."And so the seeds of Sylva's success were planted, as landowners heeded Evelyn's advice."Of course, you have to remember that this was after the Civil War so trees across the nation had been denuded as part of the war effort but, as Evelyn himself says in the book, as a result of industrial activities - such as glass making - people were chopping down trees, therefore they had to be replaced," he told BBC News. "Also, he uses the phrase 'wooden walls' - [trees] were very important for the defence of the nation through ship building.".The lasting legacy of Evelyn's vision to sustain the nation's timber supplies was highlighted in 1812 when the book was republished as a call to arms to the nation's landowners as the Napoleonic Wars took their toll on timber supplies. And there were echoes of Evelyn in 1919, the year in which the UK's Forestry Commission was established to increase tree cover, which had fallen to just 5% as a result of the demand for timber during World War One.Today, trees are back in the headlines and on the political agenda. To coincide with the original book's 350th anniversary, two authors have written The New Sylva, a timely updated version for the 21st Century to highlight the strategic, economic and ecological importance of trees." The 1776 edition, prepared by Dr. The plates include thirty-six showing foliage, flowers, and fruits of various types of trees, drawn and engraved by John Miller (Johann Sebastian Müller), a 'Winter View of the Cawthorpe Oak', near Wetherby, Yorkshire, engraved by Miller after a drawing by William Burgh, two views of the famous Greendale Oak at the Duke of Portland's estate engraved by Thomas Vivares and A.Rooker after drawings made in 1775 by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm, &c. Henrey 141. Keynes 51. Pritzel 2766. cfRaphael, An Oak Spring Sylva, 33 (1786 edn.).
