"Gosse was happily married for over 50 years, and had three children, but did acknowledge to John Addington Symonds, around the time Symonds was working on A Problem in Modern Ethics, that he was attracted to men, thus confirming the suspicions Symonds had voiced earlier. 'Either way, I entirely deeply sympathize with you. Years ago I wanted to write to you about all this,' Gosse wrote to Symonds, 'and withdrew through cowardice. I have had a very fortunate life, but there has been this obstinate twist in it! I have reached a quieter time--some beginnings of that Sophoclean period when the wild beast dies. He is not dead, but tamer; I understand him & the trick of his claws.' Gosse had love affairs, possibly not consummated, with a school friend, John Blaikie, and the handsome young sculptor Wiiliam Hamo Thornycroft. After Symonds' death, Gosse burnt all of Symonds' letters and diaries and papers that had been bequeathed to him." In den WarenkorbRare autograph letter signed from Rudyard Kipling to R. G. Von Berg. One page on Bateman's Burwash Etchingham letterhead, the letter reads in full, "Sep. 2 1907 Dear Sir: In reply to your letter of the 28th Aug. I am afraid that 'Kaspar's Song In Varda' is one of my own compositions and that you will not find it in the works of…your great poet. Sincerely yours Rudyard Kipling R. G. Von Berg." Also known as 'Butterflies,' 'Kaspar's Song in Varda' was a sister-poem that accompanied Kipling's short story 'Wireless,' first published in Scribner's Magazine in 1902 and later collected in Traffics and Discoveries.ÂKipling claimed the poem to have been a translation of an old Swedish poem (from the Swedish of Stagnelius). Double-matted with a portrait of Kipling. In fine condition. The entire piece measures 9.25 inches by 15.5 inches. English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist Rudyard Kipling's major works include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901) and many short stories and poems. Kipling was born in India, which inspired much of his work and his innovative stories for children have become timeless classics. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the British Empire, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1907.

In den Warenkorb11 pp. in total, various sizes from 115 x 90 mm, typed and handwritten. On the stationery of Bateman's Burwash, Sussex, with one exception (Palace Hotel, Jersey). Eight signed letters by Rudyard Kipling on literary themes, to his long-time correspondent Ronald Barnes, 3rd Baron Gorell (1884-1963) and long-time editor of the Corn…hill Magazine. Ranging from discussions of WWI poetry and the rise of Nazism to the fickle tastes for poetry among the masses, Kipling and Barnes kept up a lively conversation for decades. In 1933, Kipling puts forward a theory on war poetry: - "This isn't a world, just now, where there is general recognition of Beauty. Did you notice how, after the War, the men who sung dwelt, quite naturally, on the harsh lines and colours of the wreckage in which they had lived for years. And their metres conformed to their scheme. Later, when they drew free of the first stresses, they pinned their themes to some small intense personal aspect of some small thing, long watched and intensely pored over. (All the same as a man under fire in a tobacco field for hours, watches the wet trickling down the veined leaves till they seem part of his brain.) The fellows who hadn't 'been there' imitated - that's my theory - and emphasized the note and structure of harshness without the authentic experiences to bite it in." A few years later, Kipling reflects on his legacy: "Moreover, people who are interested in modern poetry are not enamoured of my stuff which, to them, represents - quite naturally - outworn methods, settings and adjectives, plus an objectionable 'political outlook and orientation'". - Kipling advises Gorell to avoid Pope's 'heroic' tradition' within his own poetry, praises an article by Wylde on modern India, and disputes Gorell's faith in progress: "It is not 'progress' nor have 'brigandage and warfare' ceased within this land. Any one who takes a walk after paying his taxes knows better". He praises the Cornhill Magazine, discusses the thankless job of running any magazine, and questions the purpose of releasing public statements in praise of Cornhill: "I know all this sounds abominably ungracious, but, after all, one has only one life to live". - Only the slightest hints of edgewear; in excellent condition. - Previously sold at Sotheby's, 17 July 1997, lot 443.

In den WarenkorbLetter. Zustand: Folds from mailing. Near Fine. Superb handwritten, unpublished two-page letter on both sides of a 9" x 7" sheet of paper folded in half so that the writing is not back to back. Written to John Fleming, the husband of Kipling's sister, Alice ("Trix"), about Trix's mental health following her mental breakdown afte…r the deaths of their parents, which occurred the previous year. In part: "We are just back from a trip abroad and I find the enclosed letter for Trix waiting for me here. It is some time since I have had news and I have not cared to trouble you because I knew that if there was any news to tell you would have written it, but I should like to know how Trix is progressing. Mr Macdonald has written me that Trix would like to have the painted fire screen from the dining room at The Gables [Kipling's parents' home]. I sent the . entrée dishes . to be put with her other things & I sent at the same time an 'Outward Bound' edition which you said you thought she would like to have." SIGNED in full. In the same month this letter was written, Kipling wrote "In the Same Boat," a short story about psychological healing which was published in both HARPER'S MAGAZINE and later in the collection of tales A DIVERSITY OF CREATURES. With a printed description from Maggs Bros. This was part of a Kipling family archive that came down through Helen MacDonald, a great niece of Rudyard Kipling's mother Alice MacDonald. Alice's three sisters were married to Edward Burne Jones, Edward Poynter, and Alfred Baldwin (father of 20th century British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin).
