Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 2nd Edition. HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY BINDING, CUTS BY DÜRER Small folio. ff. [12], 259, [3], [42], [24]. Black letter, with Roman. Woodcut title vignette and 116 ½-page woodcuts depicting Fools paradise, decorated initials and ornaments. A handful of ll. at end very slightly browned, minor water stain to lower blank margin, the odd little marginal spot or mark. A very good, clean, amazingly crisp, well-margined copy in contemporary English calf over wooden boards, rebacked to style, original spine onlaid, two clasps (repaired), double blind ruled to a panel design, outer border with blind roll of interlacing palmettes, inner border with blind roll of heads within circles alternating with geometrical decorations (Oldham, HM a (6) 775), feps renewed. Early ms casemark and Estelle Doheny s bookplate to front pastedown, contemporary autograph Wyllyam Clerke to title. In folding box by James Brockman. A fine, clean copy, virtually unpressed, in contemporary London binding, of the second English edition, including the Latin text, of this most influential and handsomely illustrated satire on human folly. A German humanist from Strasbourg, Sebastian Brant (1458-1521) completed his studies at Basel. There, he published his major works, the most renowned, Das Narrenschiff , in 1494. The humanist Jakob Locher translated it into Latin as Stultifera navis in 1497. Stultifera navis is a powerful satirical poem. In a ship laden with one hundred fools, steered by fools to the fools paradise of Narragonia, Brant satirizes all the weaknesses, follies and vices of his time. Composed in popular humorous verse and illustrated by a remarkable series of woodcuts of which 75 are now attributed to the young Dürer the book was an immediate success (PMM 37). The nautical theme was probably strengthened under the influence of contemporary debates on voyages of exploration and the vanity of seeking knowledge of God s creation. Most famous is the chapter on the inquisition of geographical regions , or the foolishness of those who want to measure the earth, illustrated by a fool s-capped figure holding a compass. It also mentions Columbus s discoveries. The work opens with the Fool-Book Collector a most amusing satire of bibliophiles and unprofitable books . In Barclay s translation, this bespeckled Fool is busy, books assembling, / For to have plentie it is a pleasant thing . Albeit he does not read or study them, yet he has them in great reverence , keeps them safe from filth and ordure / By often brushing and much diligence , and likes to have them bound in pleasaunt coverture, / Of Damas [damask], Sattin or els of Velvet pure . The English translation, first made for Pynson s 1509 edition, is by the Scottish poet and clergyman Alexander Barclay (1476-1552). The English Ship of Fools exercised an important direct influence upon our literature, [ ] helping to bury medieval allegory in the grave [ ], and to direct English authorship into the drama, essay, and novel of character (DNB). This second edition [ ] contains the cuts from the previous English edition of 1509; all but 7 derive from those in the first edition of the Narrenschiff (Basel, 1494). [ ] Added in the English editions are cuts 68, 76, 86, 101-104 (Luborsky & Ingram 3546). At the end are appended Barclay s translation of Mancin s The Mirrour of Good Manners , a poem on the cardinal virtues, and Barclay s own English eclogues. The early owner, William Clerke (fl.1590s), may be the author of The Triall of Bastardie (1594) and Polimanteia (1595), one of the earliest known works mentioning Shakespeare s name. Estelle Doheny (1875-1958) was a collector and philanthropist, wife of the oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny - a most discerning bibliophile. [2], "234" [= 236], [10] pp.Rare first edition of Jan II van Ghelen's Dutch translation of Sebastian Brant's famous Ship of fools, a telling satire on the foolishness of men. The book really is a picture book, each act of folly depicted in a large woodcut in which the fool with cap and bells plays the main role, the text explaining the woodcut and its moral. It first appeared in German in 1494, in Latin in 1497, and went through hundreds of editions in many languages, as well as spin-offs of various kinds, including a song by The Grateful Dead in 1974. A Dutch translation appeared in Paris in 1500 and a few more in the following decades, including one at Antwerp in 1548, but the present edition was far more influential and was long even cited as the first.Sebastian Brandt (1457-1521) is famous largely for this verse satire, in which more than a hundred fools set sail in search of a fool's paradise. Each humourously satirizes one particular vice or folly of Brant's day, sparing neither clergy nor scholars, and each fool meets his death in an appropriate manner. Columbus's discovery of America, made only 2 years before the first edition, earns a brief mention. Brant satirizes men and women in all walks of life and engaged in various activities, so the woodcuts add not only humour and beauty, but also a view of historical clothing, implements and customs.Lower outside corner of title-page restored and a few leaves slightly browned, but still in very good condition. The binding is worn and restored. Rare and well-illustrated first edition of the leading Dutch translation of a classic of satirical literature.l Belg. Typogr. An. Do. 1570. The Ship of Fooles, wherin is shewed the folly of all states with diuers other workes adioyned vnto the same, very profitable and fruitfull for all men. Translated out of Latin into Englishe by Alexander Barclay priest [London in Paules Church: John Cawood, 1570]. Second edition in English, the first obtainable English edition. (No complete copy of the first edition has been at auction in the past 75 years. One incomplete copy was at auction on 1975). Folio in sixes (10 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches; 270 x 185 mm). [12], 259, [3], [42, Mirrour], [24, Egloges] leaves. Present copy collated the same as Pforzheimer. Printed in black letter. With 116 woodcuts in the text and a woodcut on the title-page. "There are 116 woodcuts in the text of which 8 are repeated twice and 1 once. These illustrations are from the blocks cut for Pynson's edition, 1509 and, with the exception of two or three are very well preserved." (Pforzheimer 41). "In the present edition the Balade of our Lady which concluded the 1509 edition is omitted, while the verses excusing rudeness of the translation are transposed from beginning to end. " (Pfozheimer, 41). After the text of Ship of Fooles, this edition contains signatures A1-G6 The Mirrour of Good Maners and signatures A1-D6 the Egloges of Alexander Barclay. "The present is of considerable interest and value because of the Eglogues appended, the original editions of which are exceedingly rare." (Pforzheimer, 41). Full seventeenth century calf, rebacked with original spine laid down. Red calf spine label, lettered in gilt. All edges speckled red. Newer endpapers. A bit of rubbing to boards and edges. Occasional marginal dampstaining. Overall a very good copy. "According to Professor A.W. Ward, the popularity of this book may be safely asserted to have greatly exceeded that of any other didactic poem- the species of literature to which it belongs- ever written in a European tongue." (Pforzheimer 41) "His [Barclay's] stay at Ottery was brief but notable for the production of his first major work, The Ship of Fools, the translation of Sebastian Brant's Narrenschiff (1494) into English verse. It was printed in London in December 1509 (when Barclay had left the college) by Richard Pynson, who published most of the author's subsequent works. Barclay embellished his translation with copious additions. He dedicated it to Thomas Cornish, warden of the college and suffragan bishop in the diocese of Exeter, who may have been responsible for bringing him to Ottery, and included complimentary references to Henry VIII, Sir John Kirkham of Paignton, Devon, and John Bishop, rector of St Paul's Church, Exeter. The work enabled him to mount attacks on a range of contemporary social groups and practices: attacks which accord with traditions of social criticism going back to the fourteenth century, while reflecting some of the concerns of humanist writers in the early sixteenth. His targets included fond parents and ungrateful children, inconstant and evil women, all who wore extravagant clothes, pluralist clergy, ignorant gentlemen, avaricious merchants, corrupt lawyers and physicians, riotous servants, and sturdy undeserving beggars. He also took the opportunity to settle some private scores. The secondary clerks of the college were singled out for their unwillingness to learn, the neighbouring parish clergy for ignorance and worldliness, and a group of named men of Ottery (who appear to have been ordinary laity) for being frauds and thieves. The work shows a sympathy with humanist Latin, and criticizes those attached to the medieval grammar of Alexander of Ville-Dieu rather than to the works of Priscian and the Renaissance grammarian Giovanni Sulpizio." (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). ESTC S107135 . Pforzheimer 41. HBS 66565. $40,000.
