[Detective mystery] This issue contains the FIRST APPEARANCE of 'The Adventure of The Reigate Squire' by Doyle, illustrated by Sidney Paget, later published as the sixth story in 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes'. It is interesting to note that in the first book-form edition (1894), and later printings, the title changed to 'Squires'. Original issue magazine format, approx. 9.5 x 6.5 inches with pictorial covers, illustrated throughout, with full six-monthly index and general title page (vol. V) included at rear, all advertisement leaves present. Contents and cover very clean and bright, small chips to spine ends, one tear to joint at (foot). Near fine. Whilst the hardbound six-monthly volumes survive comparatively well, these fragile single issues were not intended to be kept for posterity and are scarce. Issued simultaneously in the USA in Harper's Magazine; the American title has always been 'The Reigate Puzzle', the genus 'Squire' being largely unfamiliar. DeWaal 228. Green & Gibson A14.
