Rosina Anne Doyle Bulwer Lytton (1802-1882), novelist, born in Co. Limerick, Ireland. As a young woman, her great beauty attracted the attention of Edward Bulwer Lytton; despite objection from Edward's mother, the pair were married in 1827. Forced by his mother's cutting of his income, Bulwer Lytton was compelled to take up novel-writing in order to support wife. Tensions arising from financial strains, and Edward's infidelities placed considerable pressure on the marriage. A painful separation followed in 1836, as a result of which Rosina was parted from her children. Her reduced income led to the writing of novels, some of which were used as means of exacting revenge on her husband. Her behaviour at one point led to her being briefly, and illegally, confined in an asylum. Shells from the sands of time, her last work, is a collection of essays on literary and other themes, and stories. Uncommon; Michael Sadleir remarked on the difficulty in obtaining her books: "Many of Lady Bulwer Lytton's books are very uncommon, and, when they turn up, are usually in poor state. Her publishers were all second-grade firms (or worse), with inferior distributive organisation, little publicity-pull, and in some cases a habitual tendency to shoddy manufacture. Sadleir 461 (variant binding); CBEL3, IV, 1160.
