Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good. First edition. First edition (stated). Hardcover 199 pp. with index. Illustrated with photographs. Fine in dust jacket with modest wear at the spine ends and darkening to the spine strip. Offsetting from still-present newspaper review font free endpapers. A cornerstone title for any lover of bookstores, the story of Sylvia Beach and her "Shakespaere and Company". Beach (1887-1962), a native of Baltimore, spent most of her life in Paris and was considered one of the most important expatriate figures there between the World Wars. While conducting research at the Bibliotheque Nationale, she heard of a bookshop/lending library in Paris and was welcomed by its owner Adrienne Monnier (the two would later become lovers). The result of the meeting was the opening. first at 8 rue Dupuytren and later and more famously at 12 rue de l'Ordeon, of Shakespeare and Company. The little shop soon became a focal point for authors and other members of the Paris literati, a place where they could not only buy ot rent books but also pick up their mail. Shakespeare and Company also undertook publishing, usually of new, modern authors who could not find mnore mainstream publishers; the most famous work to first be put out there as James Joyce's "Ulysses" (1922) and Ernest Hemingway's first book, "Three Stories and Ten Poems" (1923). Despite Depression-era financial difficulties, the shop remained open, aided by a subscription group of writers organized by Andre Gide. Beach remained open through the German invasion of Paris but by late 1941, was forced to close.
