Lacking the vol. III half-title and engraved allegorical title. Bound in contemporary spotted calf by Bradel (fils aîné; their ticket to the front paste-down of each volume). Wide Greek-key border with corner fleurons, all gilt. On the spine, eight panels. Title gilt to red sheep in the second, number gilt to green in the fourth. Gilt roll to the edges of the boards. Greek-key roll to the turn-ins. Magenta paste-paper end-papers. All edges of the text-block gilt. Rubbed generally, with patches of wear, especially at the edges. Dark ring to the front board of vol. An altogether bright and elegant set. Ink ownership signature of Emilie Majou to the recto of the rear free end-paper of vol. I. The French Revolution left a deep imagistic impression on the world, from the contemporary views of the Tennis Court Oath to La Mort de Marat (both by Jacques-Louis David) and beyond into the XIXc with Delacroix's Liberté guidant le peuple or Gérôme's depictions of Napoleon (among countless others). Although the effect of the Revolution was to end the monarchy for a time, its architects in various phases knew that the rich iconography of monarchy had to be replaced; a vacuum would be disastrous. Thus, from 1791, Pierre Didot (1761-1853) offered by subscription 112 livraisons (parts) with depictions of the major events of the Revolution -- while it raged and shifted -- with engravings by Pierre-Gabriel Berthault, Jean Desaulx, Claude-Nicolas Malapeau and Claude Niquet (after a wide variety of artists, including Alexandre-Évariste Fragonard). The final livraison was delivered in 1796 and the present 1798 edition is the work's first complete form. The conformation of the work changed with the new attitudes and regimes, including later editions in 1802, 1804 and 1817. The work comprises a third part -- despite the deux volumes of the title -- with 60 portraits of important figures in the Revolution, issued without letter-press text. Among the figures are Louis XVI, Marat, Robespierre and Napoleon. François-Paul Bradel (ca. 1757-1827) is the legendary French binder from a distinguished family of bookseller-binders, the eponym of the Bradel binding (i.e., with an internal strip strengthening the joint) -- though the present set is the rather more luxurious case-binding. It might seem an irony to have an anti-monarchical civil war's illustrations bound so regally, but there are records of several sets of the work bound by the firm. Based on the address on the ticket ("rue du Foin-Jacques, No. 296"), the binding must have been carried out before 1805. Bradel married Jeanne Derome, heiress to the great binder of that name, consolidating the two great late-XVIIIc binders into a single firm (Bradel-Derome) that remained active into the 1840's. Could the owner have been Emilie Majou des Grois (née Girard de Villars), who, with her husband Daniel Auguste (1752-1812), built the Château de la Bonnière in the Vendée (south of Nantes) in the early years of the XIXc? Certainly the set will have been fiendishly expensive, between the livraisons themselves and the luxurious binding, so the owner must have been a person of considerable means.
