In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Reissue. Hardcover in orange cloth lettered in black. 411 pp. A tight, about very good example, some soiling to the front cloth. Though typically not a reprint house, Macaulay issued this edition after the Moffat, Yard issue of 1912. Prev. own. stamp front and rear pastedowns and endpapers. A novel… that explores the themes of love, betrayal and justice. The plot revolves around the story of a young woman falsely convicted of a crime and sentenced to life in prison. Over the years she gradually loses hope that she can prove her innocence and loses hope in the justice system. After a number of years, she encounters a sympathetic lawyer who provides a glimmer of hope. They investigate the lies and deceit that have kept her in prison. Interestingly (though with nothing actually to do with the book), the front pastedown has affixed to it a snapshot of three young women in a lake or stream with the hand written caption" Helen Partelow, Kthrtn Mulliken, Marion Partelow. In the Old Swimming Hole/ Sept. 5, 1927". The rear pastedown has affixed to it a similar vintage snapshot of a girl standing at an indoor tavern counter.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. First edition. Slight scuff on the front board, still fine, lacking the dustwrapper. The author's own copy, with his ownership Signature. The second of the author's four novels about the degradations of modern American society, this one about the unrealistic and tyrannical sexual mores imposed on young…people, derived ultimately from the economic system. From a large collection of books we recently purchased from his library. Kauffman was born and lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, although he also maintained homes in Switzerland and Bath, Maine. After graduating from Harvard in 1900, he wrote dozens of stories, mysteries, children's books, and non-fiction titles. He was the editor of the Bangor, Maine *Daily News* from 1941-1947. His novel, *The House of Bondage* was widely praised, specifically by Emma Goldman, as the first serious attempt to explore the problem of women and prostitution. A scarce title.
