Algernon Swinburne's poems were largely known for their sexually explicit material, shocking to certain readers of the Victorian Age. He wrote prolifically, producing many essays of literary criticism, and several collections of shorter fiction and poems. Swinburne's use of language is adept, and creates ethereal but gloomy imagery. This edition contains illustrations which capture the nature of the poems perfectly. The top textblock is somewhat dust-soiled, bookplate on the front pastedown.

First Tauchnitz edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Mrs. Mason, with kindest regards A. C. Swinburne". Miranda Mason was the sister of Swinburne's friend Theodore Watts-Dunton (1832-1914) and the mother of Bertie Mason, whom the poet doted on in his later years.
