Paperback. Zustand: Good. Alabanza is a twenty-year collection charting the emergence of Martín Espada as the preeminent Latino lyric voice of his generation. "Alabanza" means "praise" in Spanish, and Espada praises the people Whitman called "them the others are down upon": the African slaves who brought their music to Puerto Rico; a prison inmate provoking brawls so he could write poetry in solitary confinement; a janitor and his solitary strike; Espada's own father, who was jailed in Mississippi for refusing to go to the back of the bus. The poet bears witness to death and rebirth at the ruins of a famine village in Ireland, a town plaza in México welcoming a march of Zapatista rebels, and the courtroom where he worked as a tenant lawyer. The title poem pays homage to the immigrant food-service workers who lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Center. From the earliest out-of-print work to the seventeen new poems included here, Espada celebrates the American political imagination and the resilience of human dignity. Alabanza is the epic vision of a writer who, in the words of Russell Banks, "is one of the handful of American poets who are forging a new American language, one that tells the unwritten history of the continent, speaks truth to power, and sings songs of selves we can no longer silence." An American Library Association Notable Book of 2003 and a 2003 New York Public Library Book to Remember. "To read this work is to be struck breathless, and surely, to come away changed."?Barbara Kingsolver "Martín Espada is the Pablo Neruda of North American authors. If it was up to me, I'd select him as the Poet Laureate of the United States."?Sandra Cisneros "With these new and selected poems, you can grasp how powerful a poet Espada is?his range, his compassion, his astonishing images, his sense of history, his knowledge of the lives on the underbelly of cities, his bright anger, his tenderness, his humor. "?Marge Piercy "Espada's poems are not just clarion calls to the heart and conscience, but also wonderfully crafted gems."?Julia Alvarez "A passionate, readable poetry that makes [Espada] arguably the most important 'minority' U.S. poet since Langston Hughes."?Booklist"Neruda is dead, but if Alabanza is any clue, his ghost lives through a poet named Martín Espada."?San Francisco Chronicle.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. This edited volume showcases current science education research in Canada, from pre-Kindergarten to Grade 7, conducted in Canada by a diverse group of researchers from across the country. We draw on the themes that emerged from our previous book, Science Education in Canada: Consistencies, Commonalities, and Distinctions, to guide the structure of this book on elementary science education research. In particular, chapters on science teacher preparation; Indigenous perspectives; environmental education; science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); and science, technology, society, and the environment (STSE) reflect a Canadian perspective. However, these themes are of global interest and authors include ideas for how science education research in Canada might be used by academics and researchers in other countries. This book builds a cohesive picture of current elementary science education research in Canada, highlighting themes that will resonate with international readers.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Brendan Kennelly is one of Ireland?s most distinguished poets. He achieved inter-national recognition with his shocking epic poem Cromwell, following this with the even more notorious Book of Judas, which topped the Irish bestsellers list. His latest piece of mischief, Poetry My Arse, out-Judases Cromwell, sinking its teeth into the pants of poetry itself. But his poetry has always taken on the mantle of the outcast, revealing as well as reviling, as A Time for Voices clearly shows. This selection draws on thirty years of his poetry, including classics such as My Dark Fathers, The Visitor and Poem from a Three Year Old, as well as a spattering from Cromwell. A Time for Voices is now out of print. All the poems from the book were reprinted in his later retrospective, Familiar Strangers: New & Selected Poems 1960-2004. ?I believe poetry must always be a flight from deadening authoritative egotism and must find its voices in the byways, laneways, backyards, nooks and crannies of self. It is critics who talk of ?an authentic voice?; but a poet, living his uncertainties, is riddled with different voices, many of them in vicious conflict. The poem is the arena where these voices engage each other in open and hidden conflict, and continue to do so until they are all heard.? ? Brendan Kennelly. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. From the award-winning author of The Bird Catcher, this life-spanning volume offers the delight of both discovery and re-discovery, as Ponsot tends the unruly garden of her mind with her customary care and passion. The book opens with a group of new poems, including "What Would You Like to Be When You Grow Up?"-a question that has kept Ponsot's work vital for more than five decades. Throughout the selections from her four earlier books and a trove of previously unpublished work covering the years 1946 to 1971, she offers us a "lost haven in a springing world." Sometimes sharp in her self-perception, but always listing toward pleasure and elegance, unafraid of grief and the passage of time, Ponsot continually refreshes her language and the spirited self from which it emerges.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. These poems are brilliant and dangerous. The opening poem, Invisible Woman, Dancing, is the best protest poem of the decade. The speaker attends a party full of casual, good-intentioned racists and ableists. The ending of the poem is explosive. Constance Merritt shows incredible range - erotic poems to a wayward lover; blues lyrics so rhythmic I can nearly hear the guitar; and devotional poems that offer this, you know, is love, is all, the end. Blind Girl Grunt is a major work by a major poet. -Jillian Weise Merritt's latest collection is a back in bend-bend in love, bend in prayer, and bend in anger. A Blues infiltrates these lines and stanzas, ready to sing and stay (as any devoted lover) through the long haul. And the haul here is a woman, her myriad contents, in medias res. -CM Burroughs Beyond their shared-and dazzling-immunity to taboos, the poems in Constance Merritt's fourth book are very different from each other. Different in form, from stern villanelles to get-drunk-on-them blues poems to wandering narratives. And they are different in their tones, with ruthless self-awareness next to sexy lullaby next to persuasive rage at being unmoored and vanishing beyond the flag of whiteness. Even within single poems, tone is protean. The Less Than Greater Than Blues is goofily playful and also as blunt as blunt gets about the roots of the suffering we cause each other. The penultimate poem Advent shifts between a longing that intends to wreck and a longing that intends to redeem. In fact the book as a whole shifts between these longings. As do we. Merritt implicates us gently but without hesitation, wrapping us into the brilliant skin, the ruinous eyes, / the body poised in transit that opens the collection and that judges and blesses, throughout it. Blind Girl Grunt is supple, and rigorous, and so surprising. It is vital. -Taije Silverman.…
