In den WarenkorbRare first edition in English of 14 chapters from Plotinus's Enneads, translated by Thomas Taylor. We have traced only two copies in auction records, both before 1950. Taylor (1758-1835) was the main exponent of Neoplatonism in England between the late 18th and 19th centuries. He was the first translator of Plotinus. This is his… third compilation of chapters, and the most substantial, following An Essay on the Beautiful in 1792 and Five Books of Plotinus in 1794, the latter featuring essays on happiness, evil, providence, nature, and the soul. More ambitious than the previous, this publication covers all the foundational principles of Neoplatonism. A prolific translator, Taylor is best known for his versions of Aristotle, Plato, and other ancient Greek writers. They were influential and inspired authors including William Blake, Percy Shelley, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, W.B. Yeats, Mary Woolstonecraft, and Helena Blavatsky. Lowndes III, p. 1887. Octavo (208 x 128 mm), pp. lxxxiii, [1], 600. Twentieth-century red half morocco, spine with raised bands, compartments ruled and lettered in gilt, pink cloth sides, marbled endpapers and edges. Ownership inscription on initial blank of Charles Albert Browne Jr (1870-1947), American chemist and writer on ancient Greek alchemy. Small loss at head of spine, corners bumped and worn, rear inner hinge split (visible at final leaf), but firm, little worm trails in margins throughout, light damp stain in lower margin of a couple of central gatherings. A very good copy.
