Dezember 1996 in London) war ein südafrikanisch-britischer Schriftsteller, der sich gegen die Apartheid engagierte. Leben: 1906 bis 1939: Laurens van der Post wurde in der Kleinstadt Philippolis in der nach dem Zweiten Burenkrieg aus dem Oranje-Freistaat entstandenen britischen Oranjefluss-Kolonie im Gebiet des heutigen Südafrika geboren. . Laurens van der Post verbrachte seine frühe Kindheit auf der Farm der Familie. Er las gern Bücher aus der umfangreichen Bibliothek seines Vaters, welche auch Homer und Shakespeare umfasste. Im August 1914 starb sein Vater. 1918 bis 1924 ging van der Post im Gray College in Bloemfontein zur Schule.
