In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. The Observer's Book of British Geology - Observer's Book No. 10. Printer's code: 699.150 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in Jan 1950. The book, which was the tenth of the series, was first published in 1949, revised in 1952, and then revised more thoroughly in 1971. There were five different jacket designs. Describing the principle Rocks, Minerals and Fossils with 170in black-and-white and 12 pages in colour. With a five-page Foreword by Professor H. L. Hawkins. ***Very good in light-green cloth-covered boards with dark-green titles to the spine and front board. The covers are clean and unmarked, with just some small areas of fading at the top and tail of the spine. No significant creases or tears. Corners sharp. No bumps. No reading lean to the binding. Page block edges clean. Internally the book is also very good with a neat ownership name in ink at the top of the front free endpaper, but no other annotations. Printed on nice quality glossy paper. No creases or tears. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net. The dustwrapper is largely complete, with just a small area of loss at the top of the spine and corner tips of the foldovers. There is some rubbing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling, in particular at the top and tail of the spine, and a closed tear with some loss to the surface paper at the top of the front panel near the spine. The back panel is very clean. The spine is not browned, and there is none of the usual fading to the titles. ***147mm x 95mm. 266 pages including a six-page Index at the back of the book. ***'This book has been written with the object of helping the Observer interested in the study of Geology. But he cannot be too strongly reminded that geology is not learned from books, but that knowledge must be obtained from first-hand information. In these pages the Author describes the Rocks, Minerals and Fossils so that the Observer may be aided in recognising things which he seeks--and sees.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A 1950 first edition, second printing, in very good original condition. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear. They can prove to be quite hard to track down now in nice condition, especially in the original unclipped dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
