Loosely inserted typed signed letter written on headed notepaper from The New York Times, London Bureau, Printing House Square, London E.C.4. to Mr. Peter Mayer, The Grey House, Plough Lane, Stoke Poges, Bucks., dated June 15, 1967 and consisting of about 50 words in which Lewis thanks Mayer for the lovely lunch and says he enjoyed the 'midsummer mood and, even more, the conversation.' He also says that he encloses 'that Civil Rights book.' Anthony Lewis (1927 2013) was a journalist and twice winner of the Pulitzer prize, he was Chief London correspondent for the New York Times from 1964 to 1969 and is credited with creating the field of legal journalism in the United States. J. P. Mayer (1903 1992), Professor Emeritus at Reading University and author of books on De Tocqueville, Max Weber and French political thought fled to England in 1936 having been a leading figure in the anti-Nazi movement in Germany.
