Published by James Hogg and Sons in 1861.In dark green decorati…ve moroccan. Two illustrated frontispieces, and six plates of illustrations by Henry Noel Humphries, J. Wolf, G.H. Andrews, T.W. Wood, and J.B. Zwecker. All illustrations engraved by the eminent Dalziel Brothers. Collated complete.A binding stamp from Leighton Son and Hodge on final leaf. Contains original advertisements from publishers on final pages.Originally a series of papers on the natural history of the coast, Fraser was urged to publish the papers as a book. Rather than simply being a book to teach, it aims to engage readers with the sea shores by looking at the fascinating creatures which help make it. Finished only two years after Darwin's Natural Selection, Fraser subtly avoids delving into the evolutionary debate.In its third edition, the book later became the more popular 'The Seaside Naturalist', with revisions and more illustrations. In dark green decorative moroccan. Externally, the occasional small mark to boards. Slight splitting to board joints, resulting in small lift to leather. Bumping to head and tail of spine and extremities. Slight fading to spine. Gold glint to front board is clean. Signs of wear to hinges of end papers, and the odd faint spot towards hinges and extremities. Binding stamp from Leighton Son and Hodge on final leaf. Internally, generally firmly bound with very slight wear to hinges between leaves pp.112-113, plate and leaf of p.191, and plate and leaf p.239.
