For a moment, the routine disappears and one question takes over: am I all right I do not allow the answer 'I think I'm fine' to close the incident. Being hurt and being injured are not identical. Hurt describes an experience such as pain, soreness, shock or distress. Injury describes actual physical or psychological harm. Some injuries are immediately visible. Others develop metabolically, neurologically or structurally over time and may not be obvious in the first minutes.I therefore follow a definitive order. I protect life first. I make the scene safe. A precise note made at the time, a lawful photograph, an identified witness, a medical record, an SEA clause or a financial-security certificate can become decisive.My purpose is not to turn a seafarer into a doctor or lawyer. My purpose is to make the seafarer informed, constructive and difficult to mislead: capable of recognizing danger, asking for appropriate care, recording facts accurately, understanding responsibilities, and knowing when the matter has moved beyond onboard first aid into professional medicine, flag-State enforcement, port-State intervention, insurance or maritime law.…
