The Seafarer is perhaps the most interesting of a group of elegies that are unique in Old English literature for their imaginative and lyrical qualities. This is the first separate edition of the poem, and its primary aim, apart from making readily available the text with critical apparatus, is to present to the student all the evidence available to enable him to reach an understanding of its complex theme and structure - a subject that has been a source of controversy from the nineteenth century onwards. Recent articles have proved beyond doubt the homiletic nature of its theme. and the edition summarizes this material and adds to it, but at the same time challenges some of the conclusions that have been drawn from it, notably that the poem is an allegory. A full analysis in the introduction shows that the symbolism is nearer in method of presentation to that of the religious lyric, andthe genesis of the genre is examined. The many difficulties of the text, interpretive and textual, are discussed at length in the notes, and there is a full glossary and bibliography.Worn covers and spine. Some pencil underlining.
