The first edition, largely influenced by… Robert Estienne's glossary of proper names, published in 1528 to accompany a Latin Bible. Oliver was born in Boston in 1713 and graduated from Harvard University in 1730; he was appointed judge of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas at Plymouth in 1747, judge of the Superior Court in 1758, and chief justice in 1771. But he was a Loyalist, who had no sympathy with rebellion against constituted authority, and as differences between the colonists and England increased, Oliver's judicial duties became more difficult and dangerous. In 1776 he took up residence in England, where he was awarded a degree at Oxford and pensioned by the king. He lived at Birmingham until his death in 1791. He left in manuscript perhaps his most interesting piece of writingan account of 'the origin and progress of the American Revolution'.
