This is the first edition, Smith Elder issue, 1st state, without the author's preface. It includes many excellent sketches that were not included in Scott. The Australian geologist T. Griffith Taylor was a student of Prof. T. W. Edgeworth David, who accompanied Shackleton to the Antarctic in 1907-9. He joined Scott's Terra Nova expedition (1910-13). "He had devices and notebooks hanging out of every pocket and a passion for being well equipped. He was enraptured with geology." His text was didactic, with substantial information for students of geology and glaciology. As such, it was more difficult to read, and less popular than other accounts. Later issues included the preface, which was inadvertently omitted from the first run of copies printed. Royal 8vo, (xiv) 464 pp, 44 pp ills. & fold. map, ills and maps in text. Slight bend in top leading corner. Publishers green gilt pictorial buckram with the Emperor penguin and chick on the front board. Spine bright although rubbed at tips. First edition of Taylor's account of Scott's Terra Nova expedition of 1910-13. Taylor (1880-1963) was a London-born Australian geologist. His account is "illustrated by numerous excellent sketches, contains substantial information for students of geology and glaciology. The book was less popular than other primary accounts, probably because it was more difficult to read - but as a result, it is also the scarcest of the expedition's firsthand narratives" (Rosove). This edition is in the second state, which contains the author's preface. Rosove 324.A2. Large octavo. Halftone photographic frontispiece, 43 halftone plates, (one double-page), 2 folding maps (one colour), illustrations and maps to text. Original dark green cloth, rebacked, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, front cover lettered in pale yellow with central vignette of a penguin and her child in black, yellow, and white, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. Contemporary ownership inscription dated June 1926 to front free endpaper. Cloth stained, contents foxed, folding map at rear with some linen tape repairs to rear causing toning to some folds. All plates and maps present including large coloured folding map at rear. Pages foxed especially to prelims and some margins. Generally a clean and sound copy of a scarce first hand account by one of Scott's colleagues. Taylor was the senior geologist of the team.…
