Erstausgabe
First edition of the author's analysis of contemporary economic methodologies, "the standard text on economic methods for the new Cambridge school led by Alfred Marshall" (New Palgrave III). John Neville Keynes (1852-1949), a philosopher, administrator and economist, taught moral sciences at Cambridge from 1884-1911. In the Scope and Method, Keynes sought to reconcile the then-prevalent inductive and deductive approaches to economics. The work "clarified contentious issues and explained the approach adopted by leading contemporary theorists, in Europe and the USA as well as Britain. This carefully researched monograph attracted favourable reviews and created an international reputation for Keynes as an economist" (ODNB). Einaudi 3119; Fundaburk 3699; Mattioli 1858. Octavo. Original dark red cloth, spine lettered, ruled, and with publisher's device in gilt, covers with triple-rule border in blind, black coated endpapers. Ex-Meadville Theological School, with shelf-mark in correcting fluid to spine, bookplate to front pastedown, ink and perforated stamps to title and sig. 3.6. Light bumping and wear to extremities, sunning to spine and covers, light varnishing to spine, remnants of library stamps to endpapers: a sound copy.
