Volumes two and five from Osbert Sitwell's autobiography entitled Left Hand Right Hand. With twenty three plates to each volume, collated and complete. Whilst The Scarlet Tree demonstrates the gradual growth of Sitwell's poetical sensibilities, the fifth volume comprises a collection of essays about various people he knew. Alongside a brief stint as a Liberal politician, Sitwell devoted himself to poetry, art criticism and controversial journalism, and is well known for Rat Week, a poem attacking the relationship of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII. Comprised of a second edition of The Scarlet Tree, and a first edition of Noble Essences or Courteous Revelations. With an obituary of the author tucked in. In the publisher's original red cloth binding, found in the unclipped dust wrapper. Externally smart. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with a little discolouration at the head of the spine of Noble Essences. With some marginal wear to the extremities of both volumes. The wrap has a few closed tears to the head and tail of the spine to both volumes. Noble essences has lost a little wrap to the front joint. The front hinge is starting, but firm to the Scarlet Tree. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional mark. Very Good. book.
