Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Rumbold, Gilbert (illustrator). 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Black cloth backed boards lettered in gilt, with art deco illustrated front board in gold, green and grey. 287 pp. Fabulous, colourful art deco illustrations throughout, printed in black, red, blue, yellow, tan, and green. Decorations by Gilbert Rumbold. With the inserted errata slip at pg. 25. The spine is faded and most of the gilt lettering chipped away, worn at the foot and head with the front cloth split at the front board, only held by a neat strip of glue. The boards with light rubbing and bumping to the corners, some light scuffing and scratching to the front illustrations and rather light scratching to the rear board. No damage to internal hinges, very faint damp stain to the top fore-edge tip of the first two pages, and a couple of small light spots to a few pages following the errata. The boards very sharp, thus quite uncommon and overall a very good copy of this quintessential bar tending and drink recipe book with its attractive art deco boards and interior illustrations. Fragile copy because of the split cloth at the front board, but very presentable and collectible.

First edition of this iconic, definitive text on cocktails. Octavo, original half cloth, pictorial endpapers. Illustrations by Gilbert Rumbold. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Robert Best Wishes and luck with the shaking - Harry C. 1931." The recipient was a personal friend of Harry's and Headwaiter employed in the 1920s at Sovrani's Restaurant. Giovanni Sovrani was employed at The Savoy in London which he left in 1927 to open his own restaurant in Jermyn Street in 1927. Laid in is a note of provenance from the recipient's son explaining the casual nature of the inscription which differs from many of Craddock's more formal and flourishing inscriptions. In very good condition. Laid in is a Bar exam, World-Wide Bar Guide: Famous Drinks From Famous Places, and Fleishmann's Mixer's Manual; each illustrated in color and in near fine condition. Savoy Cocktail Book features 750 of Harry Craddock s most popular recipes. It is a fascinating record of the cocktails that set London alight at the time and which are just as popular today. From Slings to Smashes, Fizzes to Flips, and featuring art deco illustrations, Harry Craddock was "the king of cocktail shakers," and The Savoy Cocktail Books contains humorous anecdotes on the origin of the cocktail and its purpose ("for the solace of man"), as well as "an elucidation of the Manners and Customs of people of quality in a period of some equality." "Behind every great bartender (literally) is a roughed-up, stained copy of The Savoy Cocktail Book.it's been an industry must-have since its first edition" (GQ).

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). First edition. A very scarce first edition copy of the iconic Savoy Cocktail book. Signed by Craddock to his friend and fellow bartender, with some truly unique annotations. This copy belonged to Collis-Phillips Halpin, a personal friend of Harry Craddock. Halpin worked as a cocktail bartender and dancer in London, and worked in many locations including the Regency Club in Piccadilly Circus as well as the American Bar. With Halpin's inscription to the verso of front endpaper and his annotations to the margins on occasion throughout. There is a note to the title page from Halpin to the second, and most recent owner of this work, Nigel Plastow. It explains how he came to own this book and is dated 1977. Collis has also written to page 284 a method of serving champagne and port. Written below this is '''My original cocktail ''Emerald Isle'' was afterwards bottled and sold as Green Goddess. Needless to say I was not given a prize, neither was my cocktail put on exhibition! Collis-Phillips Halpin'".The most recent owner of this work, Reverend Nigel Plastow has included further provenance information to this work. He states that Collis gifted him the book in 1977 and that it was his most precious and treasured possession. There is a testimony written by Plastow to Harry Craddock's character and how he would invite Collis to be the first to try new cocktails.Signed by Harry Craddock to the verso of the dedication page 'Here's How, Harry Craddock'.Accompanying this book is Harry Craddock's sword stick. It is in a damaged condition and is lacking the end of the stick. Plastow stated that the damage occurred when an inebriated patron was abusive to other customers of the American Bar where Collis worked. The patron refused to leave a party of ladies alone and therefore Craddock attended the scene, hitting the man so hard across the shoulder that the stick broke. 'The American Cocktail Bar erupted in cheers'.Illustrated throughout, with the beautiful Gilbert Rumbold illustrations.Owing to the accompanying sword stick, we would only be able to ship this book within the U.K.Typically, the boards are rubbed due to the gold and silver foil. The Savoy Cocktail book was written by Henry Craddock, one of the most famous bartenders of the 1920s and 1930s.
