Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In this intimate portrait of an extraordinary father-son relationship, Mark K. Shriver discovers the moral principles that guided his legendary father and applies them to his own lifeWhen Sargent Sarge Shriver--founder of the Peace Corps and architect of President Johnson's War on Poverty--died in 2011 after a valiant fight with Alzheimer's, thousands of tributes poured in from friends and strangers worldwide. These tributes, which extolled the daily kindness and humanity of a good man, moved his son Mark far more than those who lauded Sarge for his big-stage, headline-making accomplishments. After a lifetime searching for the path to his father's success in the public arena, Mark instead turns to a search for the secret of his father's joy, his devotion to others, and his sense of purpose. Mark discovers notes and letters from Sarge; hears personal stories from friends and family that zero in on the three guiding principles of Sarge's life--faith, hope, and love--and recounts moments with Sarge that now take on new value and poignancy. In the process, Mark discovers much about himself, as a father, as a husband, and as a social justice advocate. A Good Man is an inspirational and deeply personal story about a son discovering the true meaning of his father's legacy.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was American by parentage, though born in Florence. After studying in Paris, he arrived in London in 1884 calling himself an Impressionist although his work also showed the influence of both Frans Hals and Velasquez. He soon became a prolific and fashionable painter, known for his elegant ladies and sophisticated gentlemen. Although he spent much of his time working on a series of decorative paintings for public buildings, it is for his portraits that he is best known. This book concentrates on 100 paintings from his significant output, showing how they capture tbe charm and elegance, the opulence and assurance of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras and the place of the American ex-patriot in European society. Occasional quotes from Henry James reinforce the spirit of the age.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. The subject of John Singer Sargent's most famous painting was twenty-three-year-old New Orleans Creole Virginie Gautreau, who moved to Paris and quickly became the "it girl" of her day. A relative unknown at the time, Sargent won the commission to paint her; the two must have recognized in each other a like-minded hunger for fame. Unveiled at the 1884 Paris Salon, Gautreau's portrait generated the attention she craved-but it led to infamy rather than stardom. Sargent had painted one strap of Gautreau's dress dangling from her shoulder, suggesting either the prelude to or the aftermath of sex. Her reputation irreparably damaged, Gautreau retired from public life, destroying all the mirrors in her home. Drawing on documents from private collections and other previously unexamined materials, and featuring a cast of characters including Oscar Wilde and Richard Wagner, Strapless is a tale of art and celebrity, obsession and betrayal.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Working for four presidents over six decades, R. Sargent "Sarge" Shriver founded the Peace Corps, launched the War on Poverty, created Head Start and Legal Services for the Poor, started the Special Olympics, and served as ambassador to France. Yet from the moment he married Joseph P. Kennedy's daughter Eunice in 1953, Shriver had to navigate a difficult course between independence and family loyalty that tended to obscure his incredible achievements. Scott Stossel, through complete access to Shriver and his family, renders the story of his life in cinematic detail. Shriver's myriad historical legacies are testaments to the power of his vision and his ability to inspire others. But it is the colorful personality and indomitable spirit of the man himself--traits that allowed him to survive the Depression, WWII, and the Kennedy family--that will inspire readers today to expand the "horizons of the possible.".…
