Der französische Dichter und Philosoph J. F. Marquis de Saint-Lambert (1716-1803) wandte sich erst nach dem Ende seiner militärischen Karriere der Literatur zu. Neben einigen Artikeln für die Encyclopédie verdankt er seinen Ruhm dem hier vorlegenden Lehrgedicht Les saisons (zuerst 1769) in der Nachfolge des schottischen Dichters James Thompson, dessen The Seasons 1730 erschienen war.
