First American Edition. 12mo (19.5cm.); removed; xii,69pp. Extremities a bit brittle and toned, else Very Good. Signed by the author on copyright page. Volume one only and lacking all six plates as described on pp. viii-xii. Manual of modern military manoeuvres by the French Baron who served under Napoleon during his campaign in Egypt as well as in the battles of Marengo and Austerlitz. Following his exile from France Lacroix travelled to Boston where he became a merchant, published numerous military treatises, and opened a military training school. Eventually becoming an American citizen, Lacroix's petitions to President Thomas Jefferson for military appointment proved fruitless though he was eventually granted permission during the War of 1812 to raise a corps of French volunteers in New York City, a failed undertaking. (See "The Papers of Thomas Jefferson" (2008), Vol. IV, p. 375.) The present work exceedingly rare: Navy Department Library and AAS only in OCLC as of June, 2020. Missed by Shaw & Shoemaker and Sabin. Signed.
