The text reprints FitzGerald's first published version of the Rubáiyát (1859), afterwards substantially revised by the translator four times. Gooden (1892-1955) was an English artist who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and is best known for his fine copper engravings, including several banknote designs for the Bank of England and pictorial bookplates, including designs made for Queen Elizabeth II. Coumans 63. Octavo. With 4 full sized plates and 4 small illustrations by Stephen Gooden. Original green quarter morocco, spine lettered in gilt, green cloth sides, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, cream endpapers. In the original card slipcase.
