Summary: THE ROYAL MAIL CASE gathers documents from England during the Great Depression to recount an offense that "struck deep at the roots of investment confidence and menaced the whole stability of commercial financial practice," as stated in the book's Introduction.The book presents the well-regarded chairman of a great corporation, Lord Kylsant, who went to prison for his part in the affair, and the accountant who issued statements that told far from the whole truth about the soundness of the enterprise, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. To attract new investors, the company had issued a prospectus containing profit and loss accounts that concealed while not misstating its current position. When Royal Mail went under, its shareholders were left empty-handed. In his Introduction to the volume, Collin Brooks, an expert in explaining the world of finance to laypersons, deftly limns the ins and outs of the Royal Mail case. Professor Alan M. Dershowitz, in the Introduction he has written exclusively for the Notable Trials Library, remarks on similarities to present-day corporate malfeasance in the United States.
