An interesting work of British Topography. A new edition this work is designed for the stranger and tourist enabling them to manage navigate the railway and roads of the South-westerly county. Printed and published by H. Bestley & Son. This particular set of works featuring 8 folding maps. The maps feature numerous locations across the county, those being: Exeter; South Devon and Dartmoor; Torquay; Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse; North Devon; Coast of North Devon; South East Devon; Devonshire. Though extremely delicate the maps are in good condition, aside from one map to teh rear of the volume present but detached. With the bookplate of Montgomery Burnett to the front pastedown. In a full cloth binding. Externally smart. Light bumping to the spine and extremities. Patches of rubbing to the spine joints and board. Very light spots to the fore edge. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Rear hinge is strained but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound, with only one folding plate detached to the rear of the volume. Pages are generally clean with the odd spot. Folding map 1 'Exeter' has a small tape repair to the reverse of the map. Folding map 2 'South Devon.' has tape repairs to the rear with three small closed tears to the top of the map, and a following three to the tail, each no more than 0.5cm. Folding map 3 'Torquay' has a small tape repair towards the binding. Folding map 4 'Plymouth.' has a small tape repair to the revers, and a small amount of loss to the extremities towards the binding. Folding map 5 'North Devon' has the occasional small closed tear to the extremities. Folding map 6 'Coast.' has small tape repairs to the reverse. Folding map 7 'South East.' has a small tear towards the binding, and finally, folding map 8 'Devonshire' is detached but presents, with numerous tape repairs and several large creases due to mis-folding. Each of the maps have the odd scattered spot. Good. book.

A New Edition. 24mo; original cloth with gilt decoration; 403 pages including the index; four folding maps or plans as called for, plus an additional folding plan of Torquay; illustrated with 26 steel engraved plates in vignette; some moderate wear to spine with minor loss at the top and bottom; front hinge repaired with Japanese tissue; just a bit of old tape residue at the top of front pastedown and endpaper; a previous owner's signature to the front end paper; while this edition is undated, Cambridge University dates it at 1850. Very Good binding.
