The Rose and the Ring is the last of Thackeray's Christmas books, written and illustrated by the author and published under his pseudonym, Mr. M. A. Titmarsh; it was published for Christmas 1854 with an 1855 title-page date. The story developed from Twelfth-Night character drawings made to entertain children in Rome.
