Erstausgabe
Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A very scarce, first complete edition of J Phillips' English translation of La Calprenede's historical romance, 'Pharamond'. This is the first edition of all twelve books. Previously, a translation of the first four books was published in 1662. The initial work was left incomplete at the seventh volume, before the text was continued by De Vaumoriere.Based on the legendary early king of the Franks, 'Pharamond' or 'Faramond' was first referred to in an 8th century Carolingian text 'Liber Historiae Francorum'. This was Deigneur de La Calprende's final historicalromance. The novel gives a timeline and explanation of the rise of the French monarchy.ESTC reference no: R19768.Collated, this copy has been bound without the engraved title page and the final blank. With a red and black title page. The title page notes that this is written by 'The author of Cassandra and Cleopatra' which is Gaultier de Coste, seigneur de La Calprenede. Gauthier de Costes was a French novelist and dramatist. His History of France was started in 1661 and was left uncompleted at his death.'Pharamond. The fourthpart' has a new pagination and register.Translated by John Phillips, the brother of Edward Phillips and nephew of John Milton. This is Philips' chief translation of many. In addition to translations Philips set up his own periodical titled 'Modern History, or a Monthly Account of all considerable occurrences, civil, ecclesiastical and military'. In a half calf binding, with paper covered boards. Rebacked, with boards preserved. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the boards with small loss to the boards. Original Wraps. Zustand: Good. xx, 205 p. 16 cm. Paper covers, presumably original. Handwritten pink spine label. Spine head chipped, front cover nearly detached, tear in front cover near spine. Bottom front corner chipped off front cover and first few pages. Rough text block edge and dog-ears. First published in 1768, just before the author's death, this novel reflects Laurence Sterne's travels through France and Italy as far south as Naples. After returning, he was determined to describe his travels in the form of fiction. The novel can be seen as an epilogue to his better-known work "Tristram Shandy" and as an answer to Tobias Smollett's decidedly unsentimental "Travels through France and Italy." This novel was extremely popular and influential and helped establish travel writing as the dominant genre of the second half of the 18th century.
