Caroline Bowles's first meeting with her future husband, Robert Southey, in 1820, led to the idea of a jointly-written epic poem about Robin Hood. Unfortunately, they only produced this fragment, published after Southey's death. From the beginning, Caroline had great difficulty with the metre Southey chose; "It is to me just like attempting to drive a tilbury in a tram-road", she wrote. Fortunately, the other poems in this volume were more successful.
