Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. A real-life adventure that inspired countless travellers in fact and fiction, the Penguin Classics edition of Robert Byron's The Road to Oxiana includes an introduction by Colin Thubron. In 1933 Robert Byron began a journey through the Middle East via Beirut, Jerusalem, Baghdad, and Teheran to Oxiana - the country of the Oxus, the ancient name for the river Amu Darya which forms part of the border between Afghanistan and the Soviet Union. The Road to Oxiana offers not only a wonderful record of his adventures, but also a rare account of the architectural treasures of a region now inaccessible to most Western travelers. Robert Byron (1905-41) was born in 1905, and educated at Eton and Merton College, Oxford. He died during the Second World War, when the ship he was serving on was torpedoed by a U-Boat off Cape Wrath. Byron's The Road to Oxiana is considered by many modern travel writers to be the first example of great travel writing. If you enjoyed The Road to Oxiana you might like Charles Darwin's The Voyage of the Beagle, also available in Penguin Classics. 'The greatest of all pre-war travel books' William Dalrymple 'What Ulysses is to the novel between the wars, and what 'The Waste Land' is to poetry, The Road to Oxiana is to the travel book' Paul Fussell 'In any list of the great travel books of the 20th century, Robert Byron's account of his travels in Persia and Afghanistan, The Road to Oxiana, must be put somewhere near the very top' Telegraph. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece, 15 plates and a map. From the library of Henry Alexander Nesbitt Medd. Medd, who was an architect and best-known for his collaboration with fellow architects, Edwin Luytens and Herbert Baker, in designing New Delhi. He remained in India and in 1939-47 held the role of Chief Architect to the Indian Government. Medd's ownership inscription is on the front free endpaper, there is also the bookplate of Gavin Stamp on the front pastedown, who notes that it was a gift from Medd. Stamp reviewed the Picador edition of this work for the Spectator in 1981 and a photocopy of his review is included. In very good condition. A nice example with noted provenance. In 1933, the delightfully eccentric travel writer Robert Byron set out on a journey through the Middle East via Beirut, Jerusalem, Baghdad and Teheran to Oxiana, near the border between Afghanistan and the Soviet Union. Throughout, he kept a thoroughly captivating record of his encounters, discoveries, and frequent misadventures. His story would become a best-selling travel book throughout the English-speaking world, until the acclaim died down and it was gradually forgotten. When Paul Fussell published his own book Abroad, in 1982, he wrote that The Road to Oxiana is to the travel book what "Ulysses is to the novel between the wars, and what The Waste Land is to poetry.".

First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To H. A. Wishaw, my host in Isfahan and chaperone to the Chihil Sutun, in gratitude, from Robert Byron". Wishaw was Isfahan branch manager of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, described affectionately by Byron as "captain of oil" (p. 190). Wishaw hosted Byron at Isfahan in March and April 1934 and is mentioned several times here, his hospitality noted with enthusiasm: "three bottles of Shahi wine, an orange salad, and Wishaw's cigars have cheered us all up" (p. 235). The Chihil Sutun (or Chehel Sotoun) of Byron's inscription is the beautiful 17th-century pavilion built for Shah Abbas II. The Road to Oxiana is "an enquiry into the origins of Islamic art presented in the form of one of the most entertaining travel books of modern times" (ODNB). In his introduction to the 1981 re-issue, Bruce Chatwin called it "a work of genius" which he had elevated to the status of "sacred text". He stressed that it remained an important book, as in between the "bravura passages" Byron expounds a serious thesis about the significance of Afghan influence on Persian civilization. This copy is in the first issue binding of gilt-lettered royal blue cloth. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge blue. With dust jacket. Half-tone frontispiece and 15 similar plates from photographs by the author. Spine lightly toned, rubbing at edges, faint offsetting to endpapers else contents clean and bright, a very good copy in like lightly foxed jacket, unclipped, spine browned, faint soiling to rear panel, nicks at fold ends, short closed tear to head of rear flap fold.

Very good indeed. Byron, who died young in the Second World War, was one of the Brideshead set immortalized by Evelyn Waugh, but he was also the foremost travel writer of his age. He is best known for 'The Road to Oxiana', a description of his journey in 1933-34 through modern Iran and Afghanistan.
