Best combines geog…raphical description, traditional narratives, and ethnographic observation, presenting the lake's coastlines, islands, and inlets alongside a substantial body of Tuhoe and East Coast legend. The work includes stories of Hau‑mapuhia, Hine‑pukohu‑rangi, Maahu, and other figures central to the cultural landscape of Waikaremoana, and it preserves material that later became foundational in Best's wider ethnological writing. The second half of the book recounts his tramp through Tuhoe land, offering a first‑hand picture of the region in the late nineteenth century, its settlements, tracks, and the people he met along the way.

The work is particularly valuable as an early record of oral histories and traditions collected while Best was living and working in the region.
