The first 280 pages are printed on different quality paper than the final 300 pages. It toned more towards brown and gives the volume the appearance of being two volumes bound together into one. Early ownership name on the front free endpaper of Lewis A. Boggs. July 1837. Boggs was the Chief Justice of Spotsylvania County VA, owner of the 2000 acre plantation called Livingston. Plain brown sheepskin with maroon title label on the spine (Revised Code of 1819) and gold ruling on the spines. Volume 1 has a black leather label with Meredith & Cocke in gold. Volume II has the name Meredith stamped in gold. Both volumes have been professionally and excellently rebacked, with a partial inch of new leather visible at crowns of spines. Binding good and tight, leather not perfect (age), but still supple and well taken care of. 5.5 x 9 inches. Volume 1 has small booksellers slug from Frederick Mayo Stationer, Richmond, on inside front cover & the name J. Preston Cocke signed in pencil, dated 1877. 634 pages.
