In den WarenkorbPamphlet. Zustand: Good. No publisher, place or date. Presumed Washington DC, 1848. Pamphlet, disbound from a larger work. 4 pp. A short piece communicating Secretary of War William L. Marcy's comments on the actions of Winfield Scott in Mexico, in regard to levying taxes and using resources captured in Mexico to fund the US occupation of Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Included are General Orders issued by Scott, regarding levies and taxes, with another piece by Scott estimating the amount of troops needed to occupy the capital of Mexico, as well as sustain the occupation, support eventual US withdrawal, and fortify the US border. General Winfield Scott was one of the United States' most decorated generals, with his unexpected success in Mexico during the Mexican-American War earning him praise from the Duke of Wellington, among others. Scott and President James Polk feuded behind the scenes, perhaps due to Polk's not wanting to promote a potential presidential rival. GOOD condition. Minor spotting, scattered faint staining and some soiling present. Minor wrinkling. General toning.…

In den WarenkorbGreen Cloth. Zustand: Minor Corner and Edge Wear. No Jacket. First Edition. This is a Senate document from the 30th Congress, 1st Session, Executive No, 23. 132 pages of text material, followed by twenty-four full-page lithographic plates and a large folding map. Plates show very minor brown spotting, confined mainly to the periphery. The large folding map has two small closed tears and small areas of paper defect at left margin secondary to binding and folding process. The plates were probably drawn by Abert, lithography by C.B. Graham. The report details Abert's trek from Fort Leavenworth, along the Santa Fe Trail to northern New Mexico, and his return along the Trail. Several pages of Cheyenne vocabulary are included in the report. See Howes A11, Streeter Sale 168, Graff 5, Sabin 57, Wagner-Camp 143 Size: Octavo.…

This fascinating report ". describes his trip from Fort Leavenworth over the SFT via Bent's Fort, his survey of the northern part of New Mexico, and his return trip over the Trail" (Rittenhouse). In 1843, Abert joined the Corps of Topographical Engineers, which was headed by his father. He joined several expeditions into the west, including John Frémont's third expedition, illustrating the expedition reports with beautiful sketches of local people, flora, and fauna. He was also put in charge of a detachment to map the Canadian River. In 1846 he joined General Kearney's troops in the war with Mexico, returning to Fort Leavenworth in the following year. It was during this time that he discovered a new species of bird, which was named the Abert's Towhee in his honor. "A basic SFT document" (Rittenhouse).
