References:Howes F65; Sabin 23959; Wagner-Camp-Becker 61This early government-issued geological survey presents Featherstonhaugh's official account of his 1835 expedition across the Upper Midwest, including present-day Wisconsin, Minnesota, and parts of the Dakotas. A pioneer in American geological reporting, Featherstonhaugh was tasked with exploring mineral resources and mapping physical geography in this largely unsettled region. The report is significant for its scientific observations, early descriptions of the Coteau des Prairies, and interactions with Native American groups. Includes four lithographic plates illustrating geological formations.

First edition, 8vo, pp. 168; 4 engraved plates; original brown cloth, extremities faded, else very good and sound. Without the 2 folding maps which were not issued in all copies. This copy inscribed "A. C. Paige from the Hon. N. P. Tallmadge." Nathaniel Pitcher Tallmadge (1795-1864) was an American lawyer and politician. He was a U.S. Senator from New York and Governor of the Wisconsin Territory. The result of a British scientist's geological reconnaissance through the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi valley in 1835-37. Featherstonhaugh began his journey in Washington, D.C. and traveled via Pittsburgh and Cleveland before visiting Detroit, and travelling by canoe on Lakes Huron and Michigan to Mackinac and Green Bay, thence via the Fox and Mississippi Rivers to Saint Anthony and Fort Snelling, where Featherstonhaugh's party ascended the Minnesota River as far as Lake Traverse on the Dakota border, and back again via Lake Pepin, Galena, and Saint Louis.
