[Nature] ATTRACTIVE LEATHER-BOUND SET. Two volumes. Octavos (20 x 13cm), pp.viii; 368; pp.[2]; 344. With numerous tissue-guarded engraved plates and a non tissue-guarded frontispiece to either volume. Recently re-bound in brown half-calf, nonpareil marbled paper over boards. Gilt titles, blind decoration, and raised bands to spines. All edges marbled. Both interiors toned, sparsely foxed and spotted. Some paper restoration to title page of volume I. Very minor offsetting from engravings. Pencil annotation to a plate verso in volume 2. Edges rubbed and toned. Considerable rubbing to marbled paper, a bit of wear to binding extremities minus spine. Very good. Clergyman William Gilpin wrote dissertations on the English countryside which were part travel-book, part treatise on aesthetics. His guiding principle was the notion of the 'picturesque,' the idealistic beauty of nature only representable in painting. This is his comprehensive work on English forests.
