In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near fine. 2nd Printing. Second printing (first printing was in 1861), duodecimo size, 131 pp. One of many voices calling for an end to slavery in the United States, Moncure Daniel Conway (1832-1907) writes an impassioned plea for the emancipation of slaves in "The Rejected Stone"; a minister and an ardent abolitionist, Conway spent his life writing and propounding equality and liberty for all. "The Rejected Stone" uses both logic and heart-felt language to convey Conway's purpose and reflects the divided and scarred landscape of the American Civil War. This second edition was published just before the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, and in his preface to the book, Conway praises the work done by Abraham Lincoln and the White House leading up to it. ___DESCRIPTION: Full aubergine pebbled cloth, gilt lettering and ruled borders on the spine, brown coated endpapers; duodecimo size (7.75" by 5"), pagination: [1-7] 8-131. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with a strong, square text block with solid hinges, and the interior is clean and bright; boards are clean overall with some slight specks of soiling, corners are very gently bumped, sunning to the spine and to the edges of the boards, slight rippling to the interior pages (presumably due to the sewn binding as there is no evidence of damp), prior owner name written in pencil on the recto of the first flyleaf, and a prior owner inscription written in pen "M. C. B. Fifield, from / S J May 1862" at the top of the title page. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good Plus. Second Edition. Small Octavo (7 1/2 in. x 5 in.). Handsome, dark brown, wave-patterned cloth-over-boards, with copper lettering to spine. Very light rubbing to extremities. Chocolate-brown endpapers. Previous owner's inscription to (second) endpaper (date blurred, but probably [18]"62"). Small number (around 9) of pages show bracketing and underlining in light pencil - inoffensive. Textblock pages, bright and supple. Plea for an end to slavery by an American, abolitionist clergyman. ".Of every other flag that floats under heaven, you may be sure that it does not cover the traffic in human beings. Of thine, O Union! we cannot even yet say whether it is protecting a nationa's honor or a world's shame. The union is always called the Ship of State; and the figure was never so appropriate as now, when she has got out here amid the swellilng waves of the popular heart, the fresh gales of Freedom fililng her sails and snapping her flag, and all the churches and the parties seized with deadly seasickness. There is no doubt now what they've all been feeding on. The vomit is black. We find that the churches have been retaliating upon the native African's fondness for 'cold missionary,' with an equal devotion to pickled Ethiopian, and that the loaves and fishes at Washington have invariably been eaten with African sauce.".
